Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error Code: 3 Ways to Fix & Reset 2026

Is your Bosch dishwasher showing the E15 error? Learn how to reset the safety switch using the 45-degree tilt method and how to fix common causes like sump basin leaks and excess suds. If you have water in the bottom trough of the machine, it will trigger this error code.

What is the Bosch E15 Error Code?

The E15 error code on a Bosch dishwasher indicates that the safety switch has detected water in the lower base tray of the appliance–the trough. This code an anti-flooding feature that prevents water from leaking all over the floor. It’s usually caused by a leak in the sump basin, water tank, or hoses. Worst case, the leak might come from a broken fixture.

Quick Fix: How to Reset Bosch E15 Error

  1. The Tilt Method: Turn off power, pull the unit out, and tilt it backward at a 45-degree angle to drain water from the base.
  2. Reset the Cycle or Power Cycle: open the door and hold the start button for 3 seconds. Additional reset steps listed below.
  3. Manual Reset: Remove the bottom kickplate to access the base tray and dry the float disc. See Details below.
  4. 24-Hour Air Dry: If you don’t want to tilt the machine, you can simply leave the dishwasher unplugged (or the breaker off) with the door open for 24 hours. This should allow a small amount of water in the base tray to evaporate on its own. Once the tray is dry, the safety switch will “click” back into place, and the error will disappear when power is restored.

How To Reset The Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error Code

The safety switch that triggers the E15 error code was activated because of the presence of water. So, there are multiple ways you can reset the error code: by using the tilt method, resetting with buttons, or by resetting the safety switch manually.

The Tilt Method

The first way is to pull the dishwasher out from under the sink or your kitchen cabinet. Then, carefully tilt the machine back at a 45º angle. That should allow the water to flow away from the safety switch and return it back to its default status. That should reset the error code and allow you to continue using the machine as usual.

Reset the Bosch Dishwasher

Before you start taking panels off, it’s helpful to distinguish between a Soft Reset (clearing the current cycle) and a Hard Reset (power cycling the control board). Here is a break down for both older and newer Bosch generations:

1. The “Soft Reset” (Clearing the Display)

This is the first thing a user should try if the machine is stuck or showing a non-hardware error.

  • Older Models (Buttons on the front):
    • Look for two buttons labeled with an asterisk (*) or the word “Reset.” These are usually the “Start” and “Cancel” buttons or the “Regular Wash” and “Eco” buttons.
    • The Move: Press and hold both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds until the display shows 0:01 or the “Clean” light flashes. Close the door and wait for the clock to hit 0:00.
  • Newer Models (Buttons on top of the door):
    • The Move: Open the door and press and hold the Start button for about 3–5 seconds. The display will change to 0:01.
    • Close the door and let the dishwasher run for 1 minute while it performs a “forced drain.” When it finishses and beeps, the cycle is cleared.

2. The “Hard Reset” (Power Cycling the Hardware)

If the E15 code (or any “frozen” screen) persists, you need to force the control board to reboot.

  • The “Plug” Method:
    • Unplug the dishwasher from the wall outlet.
    • Crucial Step: Wait at least 3 to 5 minutes. Bosch control boards have capacitors that hold a charge; if you plug it back in too quickly, the “memory” of the error might remain.
  • The “Breaker” Method (If the plug is inaccessible):
    • Since most dishwashers are hardwired, locate your home’s electrical service panel.
    • Flip the circuit breaker labeled “Dishwasher” or “Kitchen” to the OFF position.
    • Wait 5 minutes, then flip it back on.

Resetting The Safety Switch Manually

Another method is to access the bottom of the dishwasher and free the safety switch yourself. You see, that safety mechanism consists of a switch and a polystyrene disc in the trough (see directions below). The presence of water in the trough will cause that polystyrene disc to float and depress the safety switch.

1. Safety First: Unplug the unit or flip the breaker. You’ll be working near the junction box.

2. Remove the Kickplate: Look at the very bottom of your dishwasher (where your feet go). There is a panel held in by two screws—usually T20 Torx screws. Remove them and pull the plate away.

3. Remove the Inner Access Panel: Behind the kickplate, there is often a second galvanized metal plate. Unscrew this to reveal the underside of the machine.

4. Locate the Trough: Now, look into the center-bottom of the machine. You will see a white plastic pan or trough. This is where the polystyrene disc (the float) lives.

So, to reset the switch manually, you’ll first need to remove any water in the trough. You can use a cloth to absorb and remove all the water. If the polystyrene disc is stuck, you’ll need to free it with your hand and return it to the bottom of the trough where it should be.

Causes Behind The Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error code

Unwanted water in your dishwasher trough could be caused by the usage of excess soap, a sump basin leak, a leak in the water tank or hoses, as well as broken fixtures within the dishwasher.

1. Excess Dishwashing Soap or Detergent

Water and soap must be utilized in the correct proportion for a successful wash cycle. The water supply is automated by the dishwasher water inlet valve. If you add too much soap, it will cause more suds that the machine can handle. Water and bubbles will flow to areas of the machine where they should not go. If it collects in the trough at the bottom, it will trigger the E15 error code.

Excessive soap in dishwasher

How to fix:

  • Reset the error code and drain the dishwasher manually with towels.
  • Run an empty cycle without soap on the hottest water setting possible. This should help clean out the extra soap suds and break it down.
  • Follow manufacturer directions for correct soap usage or use a prepackaged tablet.
  • If the problem persists, try running a cycle with a tablespoon of vegetable oil to break down the suds!

2. Sump Basin Leak

The sump basin is the lowest part of your dishwasher where all the dirty water flows before being drained out. The trough is below the sump basin and water should never reach this area. The trough contains a safety switch and polystyrene disc.

If the sump basin leaks, the water will flow directly to that trough, causing the disc to float and trigger the safety switch. Typically, this happens because the sump seal (also known as the sump gasket, at the bottom of the basin) is faulty. If it fails to create a tight seal, water will escape and drip into the trough below.

How to fix:

From the inside of the dishwasher, it would be best to try and tighten the screws holding the sump basin in place. That might solve the problem if the seal is simply loose. However, if the leak persists, then you’ll want to remove the sump basin and replace the sump seal with a brand new part

The “Sump Seal Repair Kit” (Part #12005744)

Many DIYers try to use silicone to fix a sump leak, but that rarely lasts. Bosch actually released an official Sump Seal Repair Kit to fix this without disassembling the entire machine. The kit includes a thin silicone wire seal that can be pulled into place through the inside of the tub.

3. Leaking Water Tank, Hoses, or cracked fixtures

Dishwashers contain water holding tanks and various hoses to circulate water in and out of the machine during a wash cycle. Over time, water tanks and hoses can become disconnected or start to leak. Bosch dishwashers also have several fixtures that help to guide the flow of water. Drain pumps or the basin itself could crack.

Naturally, water will flow to the lowest point in the machine: the trough at the bottom. That will trigger the safety switch to do its job, stop the machine, and display the E15 error code.

How to fix:

Fixing this problem is pretty straightforward once you’ve located the leak. Your best references would be the user manual and technical sheet, which will show you the fixtures unique to your Bosch dishwasher model. To check thoroughly:

  1. You’ll need to remove the access panels on all sides of the dishwasher and inspect the water tank and each hose upfront.
  2. Typically, it’s easier to find even the most minor leak by touching the entire length of the tank and hoses. That way, you’ll be able to feel the water on your fingertips and identify a leak, even though you can’t do so visually.
  3. Once you’ve identified which part is leaking, all you’ll need to do is replace it.
  4. Replacing hoses is very straightforward and intuitive, though you could refer to the user manual or technical sheet for guidance that’s unique to your dishwasher model.
  5. Follow the food coloring Diagnostic test below if you are still unable to locate the leak.

Food Coloring Diagnostic Trick

Since the E15 code only tells you there is water, but not where it’s coming from, try this technician secret:

  • The Trick: Dry the base pan completely, then add 10–15 drops of bright food coloring (red or green) to the bottom of the dishwasher tub. Run a short cycle.
  • The Benefit: When you look in the base pan with a flashlight, the colored water will lead you directly to the source (e.g., if you see red water under the pump, it’s a pump seal; if it’s clear water, it’s likely the inlet valve).

4. External Plumbing: The “High Loop” Failure

Sometimes the E15 isn’t a fault with the dishwasher at all—it’s the sink. If the E15 happens right after you’ve used the sink or garbage disposal, check the hose height.

If the drain hose under the sink doesn’t have a “High Loop” (the hose must be fastened higher than the sink’s drain level), water from the sink can backflow into the dishwasher. This is uncommon, unless you had poor installation or damage.

The “Zeolite Container” Leak (Specific to 800 Series)

If you have a high-end Bosch 800 series or Benchmark model, there is a very specific culprit that standard guides often miss: the Zeolite drying system nut.

  • The Problem: The large plastic nut that secures the Zeolite drying container can loosen over time due to heat cycles.
  • The Fix: Reach inside the dishwasher (bottom right or left corner) and check if the large plastic nut is loose. Simply hand-tightening this nut can stop the leak and prevent the E15 from returning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run my dishwasher with an E15 error?

No, the safety switch cuts power to the water inlet valve.

Why does my E15 error keep coming back?

If you reset it but don’t fix the sump seal or hose leak, the tray will refill and trigger the code again.

  1. I see you tell us how to do a manual reset for the e15 code water in pan under machine, however it has zero mention of how to get at it, that makes what the problem is 100% undelved as there are 2 problems now how to get at it and what is wrong . Why would you point out the issue and say how to take care of it without telling folks the first step, getting into the location where the styrene disc is

    • You’re right, and I appreciate you calling that out. I made an assumption and dove straight into the guts of the machine and skipped an important part. I’ll update the guide to include the access steps, but here is the quick version for you:

To get to that polystyrene disc, you usually need to remove the bottom kickplate — that metal or plastic strip at the very bottom of the unit. On most Bosch models, it’s held by two Torx (T20) screws. Once that’s off, you’ll see a second metal access panel held by two more screws. Slide that out, and the trough is right there.

Thanks for helping me make the article better for the next person!

  2. Bosch… A has been like the rest of the BSH bunch (Siemens and Balay). From the beginning of the century, they delved into producing overpriced junk. Thanks for the suggestions in solving an E-15 code in a dishwasher. Although Sad because I preferred it to have died and have to buy something reasonable.

  3. When I finally got my dishwasher hooked up it got the error 15 code. I pulled it out and we looked at it and my friend found a loose hose. Simple enough so I get down there with the tools to tighten the hose back up. But I come to find out I could not just tighten the hose. The water inlet valve had been installed backwards and when they pulled the hose to attach it to the outside piece it connects to it broke the nipple the hose goes on off the valve. The nipple tip is broken off inside the hose. This was because someone was not paying attention and put a piece on backwards which had the hose being pulled back on itself and since the hose was cut so precise there was not enough length do it snapped of the nipple. So, I have just ordered the replacement part so I can have my dishwasher working helping to keep my canning jars clean and hot. So, it can be anything when it comes to Error 15 coming up on the display. I only hate that it is slowing me down canning and costing me to get it fixed.

  4. We bought recently a $ 3000 wall-oven. 14 months old. Needs repair. Will not heat over 225 degrees. No warranty. Piece of junk. We also bought an ultra silent Bosch dishwasher. E15 code constantly after trying to reset. Needs repair is leaking water. Also just off warranty. We’ve been loyal to Bosch, however its a one way for Bosch. No service, lousy products. Not interested buying ever Bosch products again. Buyer beware. There are thousands of customers ripped off this way. I dare Bosch to actually help and fix these expensive no quality control products, fat chance.

  5. Our 2018 Bosch dishwasher had an E15 error code the other day. After talking with the warranty company, my husband found a couple small items down in what I believe is the sump basin area (a piece of a broken tea cup, and a metal label that had come off of some dish at some point). After removing those items, and unplugging and plugging the dishwasher back in, the error code went away. The dishwasher ran for a full cycle and the error code did not come back yet (fingers crossed moving forward). My questions are: 1) how did those items cause water to get to the basin? Wouldn’t they have had to damage the seal or something for water to leak, or would them banging around be enough to make it leak without actually cutting/permanently damaging the seal? In other words, should we assume we need to replace the seal at this point, or should that be okay? And 2) Do we need to open up the dishwasher by taking the kickboard and door off to let the bottom area dry out, or will it dry on it’s own? There were no visible signs of leakage on the floor around the dishwasher or in the basement below the dishwasher, but it is built-in to the counter, so there’s no way to know about under the dishwasher without taking it completely out, and i’m also not sure if I should be worried about dirty water sitting in the base of the unit itself and potentially getting moldy. Now that the error code is at least temporarily gone, is it safe to think everything is fine and forget it happened, or do I need to replace gaskets, open it up to dry out the machine, and/or pull it out of the counter to check underneath for leakage?

    • You can pull the dishwasher out enough to access the flood control switch from the left side of the dishwasher and disconnect it and pull the round foam plate in the middle and dry up the water and that will solve the problem

    • I really should read these things before I post them. LoL. Ok I’m going to type this time. I bought a dishwasher from Homedepot on June 25 2021. It arrived on July 10th. To have it delivered to my home was three weeks out. So I picked it up Homedepot on the 10th. Took it home and installed that same night. On my second load I got a E-15 code. The instant went great. Is there something that I might have done. I had a KitchenAid, cost me a thousand dollars four years ago. I checked it out and I’m sure it was the circulation pump. Fixing it was something I didn’t want to do. After all the new ones have got more bells and whistles. I really not going to start ripping in to it
