Do you have a Samsung Microwave SE code on the display? This could be due to a stuck key on the control panel, a dirty ribbon cable, or control board failure. Let’s troubleshoot the problem and how to fix it.
Touchpad / Button Issues
Buttons stick, act like they’re pressed when they’re not, or don’t respond. Cause: Moisture, grime, or wear in the keypad / membrane / control board.
When the SE error code appears on a Samsung Microwave it indicates one of several problems. Your microwave might have a key that’s stuck on the control pad. Or, it could be something more complicated like the ribbon cable connection is dirty or electronic control board failure.
Quick Reset Before Troubleshooting
Try these before a professional visit:
- Power Reset: Unplug for ~1–5 minutes, then plug back in.
- Clean Panel & Buttons: Especially if steam or spills got inside.
- Check Ventilation: Leave space around the unit so it cools properly.
- Observe Patterns: Does it only happen with certain foods / steam? That gives clues.
Many error codes (especially C-F0, C-F2, SE, TE) can be caused by moisture or electrical glitches that a simple reset fixes — but persistent codes usually require service.

SE Code — Keypad / Touchpad Short (5E)
The SE error code (frequently misread as “5E”) is one of the most common issues with Samsung microwaves, signaling a key-short error. This occurs when the control board detects that a button is being held down or “shorted” for more than 60 seconds. Because this error can occasionally cause a microwave to start on its own—posing a fire risk—it should be addressed immediately.
What is the Samsung Microwave SE Code error?
As we mentioned above, SE code show up on the display when touchpad or one of the buttons is stuck in the ON position. The SE code is generally associated with the microwave beeping several times, displaying the code, and not working until the door has been opened and closed again.
The SE code issue can lead to the microwave operating on it’s own, which can allegedly result in a house fire. So, if you have this problem, leave the machine unplugged or the door open until the repair is completed.
Always keep in mind that microwaves can be inherently dangerous to repair. They contain internal high voltage components that can hold a lethal electrical charge even after it’s unplugged.
For this reason, if you are inexperienced it’s best to hire a professional to diagnose and complete any repair on this type of appliance. However, if you are knowledgeable and would like to give it a try yourself, we’ll discuss how to make these repairs below.

Ways To Clear the SE Error Code
If you’ve tried the reset described above, continuing reading to clear the code.
Warning: Working on internal microwave components is extremely dangerous; the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge of 4,000 volts even when the unit is unplugged.
1. Key(s) Stuck on the Control Pad
Any time buttons begin to malfunction on a Samsung microwave the SE code will be displayed. If you find that the microwave control pad, or touchpad, doesn’t respond, but the display still lights up, then the problem is probably with the control pad.
This component consists of a series of soft touch electrical switches. They are usually made from two layers of thin Mylar plastic with material on the inner surfaces that is conductive.
A gap is formed between the two surfaces that separates the conductive coating until the user applies pressure, thus helping the two surfaces contact each other.
When this contact occurs, it completes an electrical circuit that provides input signals to the touchpad.
After regular, prolonged use the conductive coatings eventually disintegrate and are unable to make a good contact. This prevents the proper signals from reaching the control board.
To access the control pad, you will need to first unplug your Samsung microwave, and remove the cabinet.
The control pad is often attached to the actual control panel, and is generally connected to the electronic control board with flat ribbon style connectors.
Before going any further, you will want to check the connection to see if it looks okay. This part can be tested with a

2. Dirty electrical ribbon cable
Check the ribbon electrical cable on the control panel for dirt. Remove the ribbon cable from the control board, and clean the copper connections with an eraser and alcohol polypropylene.
If everything above will not fix the problem, then you need to replace the whole touchpad.
Here’s how to replace the control pad:
- Unplug the unit to prevent electrical shock
- Remove the exhaust hood, also known as the vent at the top – there should be two screws
- Slide the grill up and to the left to completely remove
- If you have a freestanding unit, you may have to remove the metal from around the top and sides before moving on to the next step.
- Remove the screw that holds the display panel in place
- Pull up and pivot the panel out
- Remove all wires attached to the control panel. Remember where each connector goes to ensure proper reinstallation
- Begin reassembling the wire harnesses to the new control pad and work backward to put your microwave back together.
Warning: Working on internal microwave components is extremely dangerous; the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge of 4,000 volts even when the unit is unplugged.
3. Failed Control Board
The same issues may occur if the control board has failed.
The control board generates low voltages that are subsequently supplied to the touchpad. Basically, when a button is depressed, a voltage signal is sent back to the control board.
When the input signals are received by the control board from the touchpad or membrane switch, it uses the commands to turn on output relays that control specific microwave components.
Such components include the magnetron and motor for the turntable.
So, if the control board is not generating enough low voltage signals, or if it doesn’t sense the input signals from the touchpad, then output functions will not be able to occur.
Your best option is to verify that the touchpad and connections are in good working condition, before moving onto the control board.
If you find that the control board is defective, you will need to disconnect the power to the microwave, remove the cabinet and control assembly, and install a new part.
In the end, the SE error code can cause you a great deal of headaches. Be sure to check both the touchpad and the control board, as one of these components are probably defective. Could you please say what happened to my microwave and what should I do
Have a Microwave Model ME21H706MQG having the same -SE- issue. This is a model with the control and display on the door and not on the right hand side.
Cant figure how to take the door panel apart to reach the actual inside to clean re-seat the cable.
Yeah. Me too. I see one little round wire coming from the door to the main body. The only screws I see are the two that hold the handle on. Haven’t found anything that lets me know how to get the push button panel out of the door. me21r7051ss
