Breville Coffee Machine Won’t Turn On

If your Breville machine won’t turn on, it is usually due to one of these issues, in order of likelihood:

1. Thermal Cut-Out (Overheating)

This is the most common failure. Two components in the Breville coffee machine contain small but powerful motors: the water pump and the coffee grinder. While these components are safe and effective, they have one major flaw, overheating. Breville machines are fitted with a sensor that switches off the machine if temperatures get too hot.

  • Cause: The water pump or grinder motor has run too long, triggering a thermal safety sensor. If the machine was used heavily or the pump ran for an extended period without water, the thermal safety switch trips to protect the motor and heating element.
  • The Symptom: The machine was working and suddenly went dead.
  • The Fix: Unplug the machine and let it sit completely untouched for 30 to 60 minutes. In many cases, it will reset itself once the internal temperature drops. If it happens frequently, the sensor or motor may need replacement.

2. Blown Thermal Fuse

Coffee machines use a lot of electricity to grind coffee beans, boil water, and steam milk. Any device that uses a lot of electricity could cause a fatal electric shock if something goes wrong. If the machine overheated beyond what the safety switch could handle, or if there was a minor power surge, the internal thermal fuse will blow. Unlike the shutdown above, this is a permanent break in the electrical circuit.

To ensure that the issue is a born fuse and not faulty electrics, plug the machine into another outlet and see if it works. If the problem persists, a blown fuse could be the source of your woes.

  • Cause: Power surges or excessive electrical draw during grinding/brewing.
  • The Symptom: The machine is cold, plugged into a working outlet, but shows no signs of life (no lights, no sounds).
  • The Fix: Check the fuse in the plug head or the internal fuse near the power cable connection. Replace with a new fuse of the same rating. This requires opening the machine and using a multimeter to check for continuity. If the fuse is blown, it must be replaced.
  • Fuses are typically in one of two locations. The first is inside the head of the plug connected to the power source. To replace the fuse in a plug head, disconnect the plug from the power source, unscrew the bolts and swap out the damaged fuse inside with a new one.

3. GFCI / Wall Outlet Issue

Because these machines use high wattage and involve water, they are very sensitive to GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets. A tiny amount of internal moisture or a surge can trip the outlet or the breaker.

  • Cause: Electrical problems in your property– outlet or breaker
  • The Symptom: Other appliances on the same counter may also be off.
  • The Fix: Press the Reset button on your wall outlet. Try plugging the machine into a different outlet in a completely different room (like a bedroom) to rule out kitchen circuit issues.
  • Reset the breaker if it has tripped. Hire an electrician for greater electric supply issues.

4. Tripped Main Power Switch (Internal)

On several Breville models, the physical power button on the front panel is a “soft” switch that communicates with the control board. If the internal logic gets hung up, it won’t respond to the press.

  • The Symptom: The button feels normal to press, but nothing happens.
  • The Fix: Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the machine, hold down the Power button for 15 seconds (to drain the capacitors), then plug it back in and try again.

5. Damaged Power Cord

Breville cords are thick, but they can suffer from internal fraying or damage at the stress point where the cord enters the machine, often caused by pushing the machine too tightly against the wall.

  • Cause: Frayed power cord prevents machine from getting enough power to turn on.
  • The Symptom: The machine may flicker on and off if the cord is wiggled.
  • The Fix: Inspect the length of the cord for kinks or melted spots. If damaged, the cord needs to be replaced by a technician.

6. Damaged Control Board

This is the least likely but most expensive cause. A leak inside the Breville machine can drip onto the Printed Circuit Board, causing a short circuit that prevents the machine from turning on.

  • Cause: Impact damage, wear and tear, or a faulty power switch.
  • The Symptom: You might notice a faint burning smell or see water leaking from the bottom of the machine before it quit.
  • Fix: Disconnect power, check for loose wires (re-solder if needed), or replace the control panel/power switch. (see below for details)

How To Fix?

  • Disconnect the machine from the power source.
  • Remove the control by removing the pins and screws holding the panel. Remember to store these clips and screws in a safe place so that you can reattach the panel at a later stage.
  • Once the panel is off, search for any loose wires or connections. If you find loose wires, reconnect them to the correct place using a soldering iron or electrical tape.
  • Replace the control panel with a new one, or purchase a new machine.
  • Replace the power switch if it proves to be faulty

Why Your Breville Espresso Machine Isn’t Heating Up

If your machine is powering on but the water stays cold, the issue usually stems from a disruption in the heating circuit or a physical blockage. Here are the most likely causes and how to address them:

1. Mineral Scale Clogs

The most common reason for heating issues is calcium buildup inside the heating element. Even if you use filtered water, minerals can accumulate and insulate the heating coil, preventing it from warming the water.

The manufacturer recommends that you avoid using distilled or demineralized water in your device, as this can change the taste of your brew. Although regular drinking water is the way to go, it can cause problems in the long run. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium leave a residue behind upon evaporation. Slowly, they accumulate inside the heating element, reducing its efficiency.

  • The Fix: Perform a full descaling cycle using a dedicated descaling powder or solution.

2. Tripped Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is a safety feature that blows if the machine gets too hot, cutting off power to the heating element to prevent a fire.

  • The Fix: You’ll need to test the fuse for continuity with a multimeter. If it’s blown, it must be replaced (can’t be repaired). Read above for more information.

3. Faulty Thermostat

The thermostat monitors the water temperature. If it fails, it may incorrectly signal the machine to stop heating before the water even gets warm.

  • The Fix: Like the fuse, this can be tested with a multimeter and replaced if it shows no resistance.

4. Damaged Heating Element

Over years of use, the internal heating coil can simply burn out due to wear and tear.

  • The Fix: Check the heating element for continuity. If the element is dead, it will require a part replacement.

5. Corroded Wiring

Internal steam or water leaks can lead to corrosion on the wires connecting the heating block. Corroded wires won’t allow electricity to flow properly.

  • The Fix: Inspect the internal wiring for discoloration or crusty buildup and replace any damaged wire leads.

How to Descale Breville Espresso Machine

How often you should do this depends on the hardness of your water and how many cups of espresso you make in a day. Given below are the steps you need to follow to descale your Breville Espresso Machine.

  1. Check if the ‘Clean/Descale’ light is on. Generally, if your coffee machine needs cleaning, it will let you know. However, there are also instances where the device doesn’t detect the buildup of minerals.
  2. Mix one packet of Breville descaling powder to 33.81 fl oz (0.26 gal or 1 liter) of water. Add this mixture to the device’s water tank.
  3. Get the device’s user manual to obtain information on how to descale your machine. Depending on the model, there are specific instructions on how to descale the appliance. The user manual is also available on Breville’s website
  4. Enter your device’s model number and download the user manual. You can start the descale process by searching for ‘descale’ using the find feature (For Windows, use Ctrl + F; For Mac, use Cmd + F).
  5. Make sure to empty the solution from the water tank. Also, after you complete the descaling process, you will need to perform a descale operation without the descale powder to remove any residue from the cleaning mix.
  6. Check if the espresso machine is heating up. If your device still doesn’t produce heat, proceed to the other steps in this article.
