LG Ice Maker Is Not Filling With Water

Water Filter Installation & Troubleshooting

If your ice maker isn’t filling or is leaking after a filter change, check these common issues:

  • Installation Check: An improperly placed filter blocks water flow. Ensure you Push and Twist the filter firmly until it locks into the housing.
  • Pressure Splashing: A new filter increases water flow. If water is splashing out of the tray and onto the floor, try turning your manual shut-off valve to a 45° angle to slightly reduce incoming pressure.
  • Air in the Lines: Trapped air can cause “sputtering,” which splashes water and causes the bin to freeze shut. Flush the system by running the water dispenser for 2–3 minutes.
  • Debris & Buildup: * Stuck Cubes: Check for lodged ice in the tray that causes overfilling.
  • Filter Quality: Use name brand LG filters when possible. Off-brand filters sometimes have the wrong bypass valves. This can cause low pressure or a frozen fill tube.

Faulty Water Inlet Valve

If your water dispenser works but the ice maker is bone dry, the issue is likely a failed inlet valve. Most LG refrigerators utilize a dual-valve system that needs to be tested for continuity with a multi-meter.

  • The Dual Valve Setup: * Primary Valve: Located at the back of the fridge (where the main water line connects).
  • The Most Common Culprit: In many cases, the secondary door valve fails while the primary valve continues to supply the water dispenser. This is why you might have drinking water but no ice.
  • How to Test: Use a multimeter to check each solenoid for continuity. If a valve shows no continuity (an open circuit), it is electrically dead and must be replaced. Click here for a Youtube video on how to test.
  • Pro Tip: Always check the wiring harness at the door hinge first. Sometimes the valve is fine, but a broken wire in the hinge is preventing it from receiving power.

Water Hose Kinked

Behind your fridge, there is a water hose connected to the inlet valve. If the water hose is kinked, it will restrict water flow to the inlet valve. It’s a simple thing to check, but very important, in order to figure out why ice-maker is not working.

ice Maker malfunctioned

If the ice maker failed to perform the diagnostic test and you are not able to run it, then most likely the ice maker motor has failed. You will need to replace the unit entirely.

Control board Malfunction

Every LG refrigerator has a control board. If the control board is not sending power to the ice maker, or one of the relays on the control board has failed, then the ice maker will not run.

Important: If all components mentioned above in the article are ok and the ice maker works ONLY when you press the RESET button (the ice maker should make a full turn and not make ice in automatic after that), then there is a possible problem with the main control board or ice level optical sensors on the ice maker itself.

Ice Maker Fan & Temperature Issues

If your ice maker is getting water but won’t freeze it, the problem is likely an airflow issue. The ice maker compartment relies on a fan to stay cold enough for production.

  • The Temperature Range: The ice maker compartment must stay at or below -12°C (10°F). If it’s warmer than this, the sensors will prevent the ice maker from cycling.
  • The Ice Maker Fan: Located in the freezer compartment, this fan blows sub-zero air into the door’s ice room. If the fan fails or is blocked by frost, the ice maker won’t freeze.
  • How to Test the Fan:
  • Frost Buildup: If you don’t feel air, check the back panel of the freezer for heavy frost. You may need to manual defrost the unit if ice is physically jamming the fan blades.

This is a picture of the back panel in the freezer compartment with the evaporator and ice maker fans.

Troubleshooting LG ThinQ & InstaView Ice Makers

For updated LG refrigerator models (including the newer ThinQ, InstaView, and Craft Ice series), the troubleshooting steps are different.

The Craft (Round) Ice Failure

LG’s high-end models now have a dedicated dual ice maker that produces spherical “Craft Ice” in the bottom freezer. This is slow-melting round ice.

  • The Problem: These fridges often have grinding noises, which usually indicate the internal gears are jammed or the shape mold is stuck during the cycle.
  • The Fix: Unlike the door ice maker, the Craft Ice unit often requires a Firmware Update via the LG ThinQ app. If the app shows no updates, check the “Ice Room” temperature—Craft Ice requires a consistent -4°F (-20°C) or colder to produce ice correctly.

The Smart Diagnosis (ThinQ App) Method

Newer LG fridges can communicate with your smartphone. Before you start taking your fridge apart, try this: How to Fix it:

  1. Open the LG ThinQ app on your phone.
  2. Go to the Smart Diagnosis section.
  3. Follow the prompts to hold the phone’s microphone near the “Smart Diagnosis” logo (usually on the top right hinge) while pressing a specific button sequence.
  4. The app will provide a specific fault code (like “Ice Maker Fan Error”) that might not appear on the fridge’s front display.

Dual Ice Maker Synch

Many newer models have two ice makers (one in the door, one in the drawer).

  • The “One-Way” Logic: If the door ice maker is turned OFF, some newer models will also disable the bottom ice maker as a safety feature.
  • The Fix: Ensure the “Ice On/Off” button on the main control panel is illuminated. If it is flashing, it means the fridge has detected a persistent error in one of the two units and has shut down both to prevent a flood.

Troubleshooting The Ice-Detecting Sensor

For an LG ice maker, the optical sensor (also known as the “Ice Level Sensor”) is what tells the machine to stop making ice when the bin is full. If these sensors are dirty or faulty, your ice maker will either stop completely or overflow the bin.

If the optical sensor is malfunctioning, your ice maker may not work in Automatic Mode.

ice-detecting optical sensor

The first thing you need to do is to visually check the ice-detecting optical sensors. They are located at the bottom of the ice maker, on each side.

  1. Remove Ice Bin from the compartment
  2. Close the left door
  3. Wait for 3 minutes
  4. Keep Freezer Door open
  5. Push Refrigerator button and Lock button at the same time
LG refrigerator controls

LG Ice Maker Optical Sensor Diagnostic Codes

To see these codes, you usually need to press the Refrigerator and Lock buttons (or Freezer and Ice Plus on some models) simultaneously for 5 seconds.

Display CodeMeaningDiagnosis / Required Action
ETYEmptyThe sensor detects an empty bin. This is the Normal reading.
FULLFullThe sensor detects ice is at the max level. The ice maker will stay OFF.
– –Sensor FaultThe control board cannot communicate with the optical sensors.
E ISSensor ErrorThe infrared beam is blocked or the sensor has failed electrically.

Troubleshooting FULL Readings

If your display shows FULL but the ice bin is empty, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the Lenses: The sensors are located on the sides of the ice maker assembly. Use a cloth with warm water to wipe away any frost or dirt on the small plastic windows.
  2. Check the Wiring: On LG French Door models, the wiring harness in the door hinge can fray. If the sensor loses power, it defaults to a “Full” signal as a safety precaution.
  3. The “Blockage” Check: Ensure the ice maker’s teeth (the plastic rake that pushes ice out) isn’t stuck in the downward position. This will block the sensor.

LG Ice Maker Freezing Up: Causes and Fixes

If your ice maker is a solid block of ice or has frost covering the internal components, it won’t be able to fill and dump ice correctly. How to fix it:

  • Adjust Your Temperature Settings: If the refrigerator compartment is set too low, it can cause the ice maker to over-freeze. Keep your fridge at 40°F (4°C). Raising the temperature a little bit can often prevent internal ice buildup.
  • Check Water Pressure: If your water pressure is too high (above 120 PSI), it can cause the ice maker to overfill, forming ice on the outside of the tray. Ensure your shut-off valve is fully open and there are no kinks in the line.
  • Clear the Ice Chute: Ice cubes can sometimes get stuck in the dispenser chute. If left alone, frost will build up around the stuck cube and eventually travel back up into the ice maker itself.
  • Replace the Water Filter: A clogged or old filter can cause inconsistent water pressure. LG recommends replacing your filter every 6 months to maintain the correct flow rate and prevent leaks.

Pro-Tip: If the entire compartment is frozen, the quickest fix is a manual defrost. Turn off the ice maker, remove the bin, and leave the door open for a few hours to let everything thaw out completely.

Detailed steps To Reset And test An LG Ice Maker

Run a Reset with on/off switch model

If your ice maker is not making ice, you’ll want to first run the test mode. To run the ice maker test mode, first of all, pull the handle to open the ice room and remove the ice bucket.

Lg Refrigerator Ice maker problems: removing bucket

There are several styles of LG refrigerator ice makers. On the first model below, find the POWER button. Make sure it is turned ON. The TEST button is underneath.

LG ice maker test button

Before pressing the TEST button, put a towel underneath to catch water or ice that may fall while testing.

Lg Refrigerator Ice room

Press and hold the Test button for about 3 seconds and the ice maker will begin to turn. The tray only holds about 4 or 5 oz of water. The towel should minimize any spillage.

Run a reset without on/off switch model

Another style of ice maker has no POWER switch and no tray. Even though there’s no tray you should still place a towel below the ice maker before running the tests. This reset can be used for the ice makers in bottom freezers. Keep reading…

On this type of ice maker, there is a tiny hole on the left side. This is a Test Button. Use a paperclip or piece of wire to press and hold the button for about 3 seconds until the arm starts to turn.

Paperclip used as tool for LG test button

For the first 2 hours the refrigerator has been plugged in, the ice maker test can only be run once. If you wish to run the test mode a second time, unplug the unit for about 30 seconds to reset the ice maker.

This RESET procedure is also applied to the ice maker located in the bottom freezer.

  1. My LG refrigerator ice maker makes ice but the ice clumps together on the right hand side of bin and we can’t remove bin when it does this. It takes up at least 1/3 of the bin’s capacity. I have seen what looks like an icicle hanging from the mechanism.

    • Hi Gale,

I have the same problem. Found a video by Eric Rudolph on YouTube on LG ice maker maintenance. Appears the problem is that the filler hose bringing water to the ice maker is clogged which creates increased pressure (like a thumb over a garden hose) that then causes the water to spray all over the place instead of neatly filling the trays. Some goes into the ice bin causing the ice to clump, and some goes down the right side and freezes under the bin. The video showed how to clean the filler hose with a paper clip. I’m still working to get mine fully clear but it’s getting better.

      Maybe this will help you.

    • Hi Ryan, the water inlet valve has 2 lines. 1st for the water dispenser and 2nd for ice maker. You need to check continuity for both using multimeter or solenoid for the ice maker has been clogged. So, if ice maker not filling up, seems like the problem with inlet valve itself

      • Mine is similar but only a little water fills the tray. It seems it is a very short cycle when I hear the water fill go into the tray. Any suggestions? Thank you for your service!

      • Hi, my LG LMX25981 has a similar issue, I can hear the pump from ice dispenser trying to fill the ice tray with water, then checked, nothing. I have tried these methods several times and it seems like hit-miss, meaning sometime the water will fill the tray, but majority of the time no water. Other reset methods were completely power off both from ice maker and/or main power supply (from wall), disconnect hardwire from ice dispenser, hold ice size selection button for 7-10 secs. Parts replacements are water valve, water filter and new ice maker. Water pressures normal as dispensed from water dispenser and ‘occasionally’ to ice tray. Please help as I cannot figure out the issue. Thank you in advance, Richard

      • Hi, Richard. Inlet valve assembly has 2 solenoids. One for the water and 2nd for ice maker. Seems like in your case, ice maker solenoid clogged up by deposits. If you can use multimeter check the power once it should fills up with water. If solenoid energized but no water coming out, it is clogged or burnt out.

      • My ice maker was working fine until the electrician came in and shut off the power in my kitchen briefly. I noticed this morning not much ice. I have been following all your reset methods. No water is in my ice tray now. I unplugged fridge for 30 secs. Heard all the proper noises, however still no water. WORKED fine yesterday morning. We have the LFCS27596S. I have also turned off the power button/back on, the icemaker, removed the drawer. Very difficult to find the reset button or pin hole. I did find a small pin hole on the front by the power button, however when inserting a pin the area was hard, nothing to push for a reset. The lever on the side, I am not sure how hard you are to push the lever down.. It tends to want to pop up. Like I said everything was perfectly normal, until the turned off our power for a few moments. Please help

      • Hello Eugene – I am having what I think is the same problem as these two users. LG LFX31925ST/06 Everything is working fine, cubes are being produced, stir motor in compartment works but cubes won’t dispense from the outlet. The “door” won’t open but I can open it by hand. Is there a solenoid to open the door? I have a diagram of the parts of the ice maker but I don’t see that part.

      • Hi, i’m having problems making ice. It seems like the ice cube tray has ice cubes in it snd sometimes it works and I have ice cubes in my bucket and other time water just pours into my bucket and then I just end up with one big frozen block. I even put a new filter in. I even lowered my temperature and I had three days of making ice and now it’s back to the ice cube tray not dropping ice cubes i’m just getting water poured into my ice bucket. What possibly could be my problem.
        Thank you.

      • Hi Heidi, you need to check power using multimeter. if it is not getting power, then problem can be related with main control board, which is located behind the fridge. Tell me the model number of your fridge and I can tell you what kind of control board you need.

  6. I’m having the same issue as Elizabeth. Ice will only dump when I use the test button. Refills fine BUT will not rotate to release the ice. Where is the sensor you referenced?

      • Hey, Eugene, looks like you’ve got the answers for most problems. Our icemaker is the model with the power switch and it makes the ice ok for probably 3 months then will stop dumping from the tray. I pulled the icemaker out and made sure it was clean and then left it out overnight to see if moisture had gotten into any of the mechanicals. Put it back in and worked great for a couple months again. Do you think moisture is still getting in and freezing or is the control module failing?

      • Hi Gerald, as long as it keeps working once you cleaned it, I think the problem not with the control module and not with moisture. I guess that some amount of water splashes out when entering ice maker. But I don’t know for sure.

    • I am having the same issue as Elizabeth. I’ve changed the filter when i do the reset button it will dump the ice and than add water to the tray then it stops. the ice will freeze in the tray but it won’t dump or do anything else.

    • Hello Elizabeth. Hard to say what exactly caused this issue, but maybe it related to the optical sensor on your ice maker. Make sure nothing blocking this sensor, but if it will not help, so then you need new icemaker. (see link in the post)

      • I have this same issue. If I press and hold the reset button the ice will dump into the tray and refill with water but then won’t dump the ice on its own. I replaced the ice maker this weekend and same problem. Fills with water, freezes, but won’t dump the ice unless I push and hold the reset button.

      • Hi Mick, dealing with this type of ice maker is tricky, last thing what you can try is to change the control board. Because the control board allows the ice maker to work in automatic mode.

      • Hi I have a same problem. Whenever I reset the button it will release ice from the ice tray. I replaced with a brand new ice maker and still doing the same. It’s making ice but not releasing. Please advise

      • What is the temp inside the ice maker compartment? If it’s high than it should, the ice maker will not work. try to decrease temp in the freezer. let say from 0F to -5F

      • Hi Eugene,

Still not releasing ice from the ice tray. Do you think I may have received a bad Control board or Ice maker. Should I try to replace it again. Very frustrated not sure what to do.

      • To be honest, sometimes even we as a technicians don’t know how to fix this or that (especially if its related with control boards). SO, in you case, you can try to replace control board, cause you dont have any options for now. Sorry

  8. When i press reset it turn the tray then fills fine. But then.. it doesn’t dump and refill. So the water works when prompted by the reset and the tray turns out on reset but it won’t do it otherwise. Is there a timer or something?

      • Hi Rey, how do you know its making extra ice? ice maker will turn off (stop making ice) once it filled with ice cubes to a certain point. doesn’t matter ice Plus feature is ON or OFF

      • Eugene, I own an LG LFXC24796S. It makes ice just fine, but when the ice bucket is full, it seems that water must be leaking down the right side because those cubes freeze together. It makes it impossible to remove the bucket without breaking up the jam. This model has an auto feeler arm, but I don’t know if it works. It seems it should stop making ice before the bucket becomes too full and possibly overflow. Is there a setting or test to do?

    • Eugene, I am having the same problem as Michael has. It is the filler tube that fills the ice cube tray. It freezes up and won’t release water to refill the tray with water. What do you think the remedy could be?

      Reply
      • Hi Steve, my guess, if the filler tube freezes up, could be the inlet valve, that sipping water into the ice maker ( ??? ) and not holding water pressure due to calcium build-up…. i don’t know, try to change inlet valve and see it will make any difference

      • I have the same problem, no water feed into ice maker. I replaced the inlet valve today and is working fine, the ice maker runs the test cycle as it should, but no water feed at the end of the cycle. It makes the noise it always has made when pumping the water up to the ice tray.
Just changed freezer temperature from 0 F to 4 F on the recommendation of another website. Let’s see if it’s true that the line freezes at lower temperatures, which I had thought was the case for a few years of having this intermittant problem.

It doesn’t look like I can replace the line itself from the inlet valve to the ice maker, or can I? If so what’s the part number please 🙂

      • You can try this: 1. Turn water tap OFF 2. Disconnect ice maker water tube from the inlet valve and try to blow into that tube. if it will blow easily, then it’s not frozen. But if it will not blow out easily, turn the fridge OFF for 24 hours, in order to thaw all ice builds up. And then see if ice maker will start making ice.

      • thank you Eugene. I removed the line from the newly installed inlet valve and I was able to blow through it. While I had the line removed, I ran the test cycle on the ice maker to see if the inlet valve would release water when the ice maker called for it to refill. Just a drop came out. The other side of the inlet valve pumps water to the water dispenser in the door no problem. Any ideas?

      • Follow up, the line from the inlet to the ice maker is clear. So I left the line disconnected from the inlet valve and ran a test cycle of the ice maker. It asked for water at the end of the test but nothing came out of the inlet valve. So, new inlet valve works on the water dispenser side, ice maker itself works, line clear. What’s left?

      • Is there a fix to getting the ice to break apart as it falls into the ice bin? We’re constantly having to beat the ice with a wooden spoon. Is this a problem with the ice maker or just something these LG fridges do?

We used to have a full bin all the time, but now it’s always empty because we use it. But it continues to make ice, so it’s working… it’s just making very small amounts! And by the way, the ice cubes that it makes are normal-sized so it’s not like the trays are not filling with water. CAN YOU HELP ME EUGENE?

      Reply
      • If ice maker not getting enough water: 1. Inlet valve partially clogged 2. Water fill tube (on the ice maker side) partially clogged by deposits. Also, put thermometer in the ice maker compartment to see what the actual temp is. It should be no less then +2 F

      • Michael, I push my test button and nothing happens. It is like there is not electricity getting to the ice maker to make it cycle. I replaced it with a new ice maker…same thing, pushed the test button and nothing. Any thoughts?

      • Another cause of not getting enough water is a solenoid valve that does not shut off completely and allows a very small amount of water to continue to flow, and this water slowly freezes and blocks the water line where it goes through the back of the freezer. I’ve had this happen twice on my LG. Both times removing the water line connection from the back of the fridge and clearing out the ice in the section of line in the fridge wall, and replacing the solenoid fixed it.

      • How do you unclog the water fill tube? “2. Water fill tube (on the ice maker side) partially clogged by deposits.” Mine is 100% clogged with either deposits or ice (I think it’s frozen). I have already replaced the inlet valve, and the ice maker motor is turning the arm in a full circle (so it appears to be functioning), but NO water is coming out of the fill tube. New filter, plenty of pressure, drinking water dispenser works fine, but no water comes out of the icemaker fill tube.

      • I found that there were two different valves needing to check- the main inlet valve on the back of the fridge, and then a “y” solenoid valve inside the door for the icemaker/water dispenser. I replaced the valve on the back, and restored the water flow to the water dispenser. But like you, little to no water to the ice tray and inconsistent ice production. After finding and replacing the valve in the door, I am making full size cubes again. On my model, this valve is accessed by opening the door and removing the lower shelf on that door, revealing an access panel with two screws. Removing that panel reveals the solenoid valve and the drinking water tube that is coiled up to expose the water to the cold air.

      • Eugene, great advise, thanks! I’m assuming mine has excess deposits in the ice side of things…we have very heavy water here and our softener went out for a period of time. Best advise to get that fixed?

      • I assume you don’t drink water from the softener? ))) Hard to say what exactly went wrong, but try to reset ice maker and let it fill with water. If nothing comes out during fill, then most likely ice maker inlet valve clogged (located in the left door)

    • Hi
I changed the ice maker. It makes ice. When the test button is manually pressed it releases ice cubes into the tray. It does not however release the ice into the tray automatically. Why could that be? Thx

      • Eugene, I tried the test button and the ice maker did not cycle. I replaced the ice maker with a brand new one. Pushed the test button and it did nothing. I made sure it is turned on. Water is coming through the water dispenser. It appears there is no electricity getting to the ice maker. Thoughts?

      • Gene, I’ve tried everything I think regarding my ice maker not working correctly. It will not dump the ice. When I hit the reset it goes through the process just fine. Ice maker makes ice but won’t dump the ice until I hit the reset.
My fan is working (checked with magnet)…my ice detecting eyes are working (get an ETY code). It seems a shame to have to replace the whole control board $$$$ to fix this problem. Is there any board level repair I can try or is there something I am missing. My Fridge model is LFXS24623S/01

      • The appliance is set to -16 Celsius (3.2F). I will try to buy a small thermometer that I can leave in the ice maker compartment to get the exact temperature reading.

As for checking the freezer fan, I’m not sure what to look for. I opened the freezer but could not locate anything looking like a fan/motor

      • Eugene Smith I need your help real bad. New ice maker. New water fill valve in the back.New water fill valve in the door. New filter. Tray works and reset works. Won’t fill with water. I can even hear it sometimes going through the motion trying to fill with water but not water. I have water at my water dispense. When I replaced the water fill valve in the door, I was able to blow on the line from the valve up to the ice maker and it seemed clear. I’m out of things to do.

      • Seems like there is a restriction in the water line somewhere. Did you check the water line from the filter to the secondary inlet valve (left door)? I would check all of them, by blowing through and let somebody check another side of the plastic tube while you blowing.

      • Hello Frank, I’m having exactly the same problem. I even checked the power going to the door ice valve side and there is no power. I tested while the test cycle. So there is something preventing the valve to let the water flow to the ice maker. The ice sensor test indicates empty so they are OK. No sure what is the logic that prevents water to flow to the ice maker.
I’ve also replace the board on top of the door. Din’t fix.

    • Hoping for advice: I have LG LSC22991ST/01 Fridge. Mostly love it except the gets finger prints easily! During height of the Pandemic ice maker quit working. I have replaced filter but waited till last month to unplug and finally empty out entire fridge, waiting thinking something was clogging lines. I plugged back in, turned on ice maker and reset from tiny hole in front of ice maker and waited. The handle turned but then NOTHING. Your thoughths? I use conditioned water throughout home so should not be calcium buildup. Thanks in advance for any help!
