Whirlpool is a popular and recognizable dishwasher manufacturer, but their dishwashers are prone to have some common problems. In 2026, the most common issues reported by users and technicians center around drainage, specific mechanical seals, and sensor-related cycle interruptions.
Quick Fixes for Whirlpool Dishwasher Problems
- Reset the unit – Cut power at the breaker for 5 minutes.
- Clean the filter – Remove debris to improve washing and draining.
- Check spray arms – Clear clogs and ensure they spin freely.
- Inspect water supply – Make sure the valve is open and hoses aren’t kinked.
- Look for error codes – Use diagnostic mode to identify part failures.
Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes
Failed Circulation Pump (Wash Motor)
A failed wash pump or motor will prevent the water from being propelled through the spray arms. If the arms don’t spray water, the dishes will not get clean.
A motor can fail for a variety of reasons, such as a wiring fault between the control board and the motor or a faulty control board. It is possible for the pump to get clogged and cease to function properly. In this case, you only need to clean out the motor.
- Pull the dishwasher out from the cabinet and counter top without disconnecting anything.
- Start a cycle and listen for the pump to turn on. It should turn on within a couple minutes of the washer filling with water. If, not you likely need to replace the motor.
- Read this detailed guide for how to test the motor for continuity and for how to remove and replace. Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Washing Repairs
Replacement circulation pumps can be purchased on Amazon for around $40. Click here. Check model number before ordering.

Clogged Spray Arms
Spray arms can get jammed with food debris or even hard water calcium buildup. If the motor seems to be running, the water may not be able to exit out the holes on the arms.
Here are the steps to unclogging the spray arm holes:
- Remove the spray arm from the dishwasher
- Use a piece of wire that is slightly smaller than the spray arm holes to clean it effectively
- Put the arm back in place and make sure it turns easily
- When the arm is extremely clogged, soak it in warm water and vinegar to dissolve all mineral deposit and other debris
Clogged Food Chopper
When the food chopper blade is responsible for pulverizing food particles so they can pass safely through the drain. When it’s obstructed by food debris, the wash motor’s water pressure drops significantly. Instead of a powerful spray, your dishwasher only produces a weak trickle of water. A jammed chopper can also prevent the unit from draining properly, leading to dirty water being recirculated back onto your “clean” dishes. The best fix is to clean the dishwasher thoroughly:
- Disassemble the Interior: Remove the fasteners from the top, back, and bottom, then take out the spray arms, spinning mechanism, screen, and filter.
- Clear Standing Water: Use a turkey baster to suction out remaining water and blot the surface dry with paper towels.
- Deep Clean the Components: Scrub the food chopper assembly and all removed parts with dish soap and a toothbrush, ensuring all ports are clear and water flows through them freely.
- Run a Vinegar Cycle: With the internal parts still removed, run a regular wash cycle using vinegar to eliminate deep-seated gunk and clogs.
- Reassemble: Once the cleaning cycle is complete and the parts are thoroughly scrubbed, put the dishwasher back together.
Low Water Temperature (Below 120°F / 49°C)
If your dishwasher water temperature is too low, it creates a “domino effect” of cleaning failures. Most modern detergents, especially pods, require a minimum temperature of 120°F (49°C) to dissolve the outer casing and activate the enzymes that eat away at food proteins. Cool water also fails to melt grease that becomes a cloudy film on your glassware. Cool water also slows the drying process and the dishes may remain wet.
Make sure your hot water heater is set appropriately. If your dishwasher is a long ways from the hot water heater, you’ll need to preheat the water. Quick Tip: Run the kitchen sink until the water is hot before starting your dishwasher to ensure the first fill is at least 120°F.
Failed or Restricted Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve is the component responsible for regulating water flow into your Whirlpool dishwasher. Over time, this valve can fail mechanically due to mineral buildup or electrically due to internal component failure, both of which prevent the unit from filling properly and leave dishes dirty. Since this controls water flow, its failure means your dishes will not get clean.

Below is a picture of mechanical failure because the valve has a buildup of minerals and dirt from the water. It will not open and close as it should.
How to fix it: Because this part cannot be repaired, the only solution is replacement. Replacement valves are available on Amazon for around $15, depending upon model. Click here.
- Locate the water Inlet valve: Depending on your specific model, the valve is located at either the front-bottom or the rear of the machine. It’s located where the water supply hose connects to the appliance.
- Disconnect the power supply from the machine.
- Disconnect the water supply lines from the valve. Keep rags handy for drips.
- Remove the faulty valve, and install a new one in its place.
- Reconnect everything and run a normal wash load to see if the problem is corrected.
Dishwasher Not Drying Dishes
Failed Heating Element
Dishwashers use a vent fan assembly and heating element to dry the dishes. As the element heats up the air to evaporate moisture, the clean dishes dry out. A faulty part leads to wet dishes. Replacement elements are typically affordable (around $30) and can be found on Amazon; always verify your model number first.
- Disconnecting: Access the lower panels at the bottom of the unit, disconnect the electrical connectors, and remove the nuts securing the element.
- Removal: Open the door, move the spray arm out of the way, and pull the old element out from the retaining brackets inside the tub.
- Installation: Slide the new element into the internal retaining brackets and feed the terminals through the openings at the front of the basin.
- Reassembly: Ensure the element is clear of the spray arms, close the door, and reconnect the wiring and nuts from underneath the unit.

Air Vent Blockage
While many Whirlpool models rely primarily on a heating element (the big black ring at the bottom) to dry dishes, mid-range and high-end models (like those with Fan Dry) use a dedicated vent and fan assembly to push out steam.
- The Active Vent: Many Whirlpool units have a “wax motor” or electronic solenoid that opens a flapper valve on the vent during the drying cycle. If this valve fails to open, the steam stays trapped.
- The Fan Assembly: On models featuring Fan Dry or Turbo Dry, a small fan motor (usually located in the upper corner of the door or the top of the tub) pulls fresh air in and pushes moist air out.
- Common Failures: Whirlpool vents can become clogged with debris or “gunk.” Additionally, if you have a fan-assisted model, the fan motor itself can burn out or become loud and grinding.
- Location: In Whirlpool dishwashers, the vent is often located in the upper left-hand corner of the inner door panel or hidden behind the control console.
Cycle Not Completing or “Clean” Light Flashing
Whirlpool dishwashers use a series of sensors to monitor water temperature and soil levels.
Heating Element Failure: If the water doesn’t reach the required temperature (usually 120°F), the control board may pause or stop the cycle to prevent poor cleaning.
Soil Sensor (Turbidity Sensor): If this sensor is covered in gunk, it tells the dishwasher the water is always dirty, leading to incredibly long cycle times (sometimes 3–4 hours) or error codes like F10 or F15.
The Turbidity Sensor (OWI – Optical Water Indicator) is located at the bottom of the wash tub under the lower spray arm. Remove the lower dish rack and arm, as well as the filter assembly. It is a small round plastic housing with a clear or dark lens—that’s the turbidity (OWI) sensor. Inspect it for heavy buildup.
Whirlpool Dishwasher Has No Lights/Not Responding
If the controls on the dishwasher have no lights and do not respond, check the power supply first. Sometimes the dishwasher can become unplugged under the kitchen sink, or the breaker has been tripped.
If the dishwasher has adequate electricity, the reason for this problem is due to a burnt thermal fuse on the control board. Thermal fuses cannot be repaired and must be replaced, but it is fairly easy to do.
The thermal fuse is located in the console of the dishwasher. See Pictures.
How to Fix it:
- Unplug the dishwasher from the power outlet and turn off the power supply.
- Remove the screws holding the console in place. You should be able to open the console. Close the door and keep the panel by the door.
- Remove the cover on the thermal fuse. With the cover off, you will see the thermal fuse located right on the control board.
- Take a small screwdriver to disconnect the connector. Then, cut off the terminal block and remove the electrical tape holding the wires together.
- Strip the wires back so that you can put on the new thermal fuse.
- Now, put the mounting block on the new thermal fuse. Retape the wires. Then, put the stripped back wires into the terminal block.
- Remount the thermal fuse on the control board. Reassemble the dishwasher.
Control Board Glitch (Reset May Be Required)
A control board glitch can cause your Whirlpool dishwasher to stop washing properly. Power surges, interrupted cycles, or minor software errors can disrupt communication between components like the water inlet valve, circulation pump, and heating element. Before doing a complete replacement, try resetting the dishwasher by unplugging it (or turning off the breaker) for 5–10 minutes.
Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Draining: #1 complaint
If you see more than an inch of water at the bottom after a cycle, you may have a drainage failure. This is caused by a number of things:
- Clogged Filter: Whirlpool filters are designed to be removable. Over time, the filter gets clogged with grease and food, stopping water flow.
- Drain Pump Blockage: A small piece of glass or bone might get past the filter and jam the pump impeller.
- Drain Pump Failure: Long term blockage or electrical error
- Air Gap/High Loop: If your sink is draining into your dishwasher, it’s usually because the drain hose lacks a “high loop” or the air gap on your sink is clogged.
How to Fix it:
- Remove the filter and clean it out
- Check the pump impeller for clogs. Remove the jam, using a turkey baster with water to spray the clog clear
- Replace the Drain pump
To get access to these parts, remove the outer door panel. Then, remove the access panel and sound pad. Disconnect the wire connector from the drain pump. Remove the drain pump. Connect the wire connector to the new pump and reassemble the access panel and outer door panel.
Diverter Shaft Seal Leaks
Whirlpool has faced significant scrutiny (including class-action lawsuits) over a specific leak in their “sump assembly.”
- The Symptom: Small amounts of water appearing directly under the center of the dishwasher.
- The Cause: The diverter motor shaft seal (which directs water to the upper or lower spray arms) can break down, or it can be incorrectly installed in a way that traps debris, eventually causing it to fail.
- The Fix: Often requires replacing the entire sump assembly, as the seal itself is rarely sold separately by the manufacturer.
Noisy Operation (Grinding or Squealing)
High-Pitched Squealing: Often points to the circulation pump seals drying out or wearing down.
Grinding: Usually indicates debris in the wash pump or a failing wash motor bearings.
Common Error Codes for Whirlpool Dishwashers
Entering diagnostic mode can help you troubleshoot with more precision. See Instructions below the chart.

Maintenance Tips for Dishwashers
- Reset the dishwasher – Turn off power at the breaker for 5 minutes to clear control glitches.
- Check the door latch – Make sure the door fully clicks shut; a faulty latch stops cycles from starting.
- Clean the filter – Remove and rinse the bottom filter to improve washing and draining.
- Inspect spray arms – Clear clogged jet holes and ensure arms spin freely.
- Check water supply – Confirm the shut-off valve is fully open and the inlet hose isn’t kinked.
- Unclog the drain hose – Look for blockages or improper high-loop installation.
- Test the garbage disposal connection – Remove the knockout plug if recently installed.
- Verify detergent use – Use fresh, correct-type detergent and avoid overfilling.
- Inspect float switch – Make sure it moves freely and isn’t stuck in the “up” position.
- Check for error codes – Enter diagnostic mode to pinpoint electrical or component faults.
The ice maker is frozen and will not dispense ice but it does create ice and dump ice into bin which can be harvested.
The function controller on my dishwasher is very hard to turn but the system works fine. Fix????
Hi I have a 3 year old Whirlpool dishwasher. It starts but soon after it stops. I opened and restarted it and it acts like it’s trying to start but doesn’t. The pod is also still there and never completely opened up on last cycle. Any thoughts? Thank you!
I am having the same problem Whirlpool Dishwasher 3 years old. Lights on control panel are on starts then shuts off. Acts like it’s trying to start but doesn’t. The pod is also still there from previous and never opened up on last cycle. Do you have a diagnosis?
Sorry my previous email had the wrong model, my model is GDF520PSJ2SS
My dishwasher wouldn’t turn on (no lights or power) but was able to be reset at the breaker (it was not tripped). This happened exactly the same way a little later a second time, what area should I trouble shoot? My model is WFG505M0BS2, worked no problem for three years.
hi
My dishwasher is not pumping out the water and never any hot water and it is about 12 years old or more.
Can you help me
Pat
here is It will apply to any dishwasher brand
Do you use pods? My mom had a problem with her unit leaking, and not fully draining. After a few visits from the repairman he asked the magic question about pods. Seems they clog the sprayers or something… he told us to run an appliance cleaner through it. Got one at the grocery store: “Lemi Shine”. I think it’s a citric acid cleaner. Gonna try that in mine today: only the light load function is working…
Meanwhile I only use the powder dish detergent like “Cascade”. D/W’s lasted 20-30 years when folks used that so sticking with success… cheaper and more ecological too: no plastic packaging and I recycle the paper box.
I have some leftover parts I don’t know how to attach, a tapered pipe with a cap up top and a straight pipe. Energy star, built-in.
Are their instructions and drawings somewhere?
4 month old dishwasher, whirlpool, does not dry top rack at all every appliance was professionally installed by licenses plumber and inspected by city inspectors so it is not a pump, poor install, etc!!! is it just a defective dish washer that needs a service call?? thanks
My whirpool dishwasher makes a horrible noise when it changes cycles and
sometimes does not drain. Does this mean I need a new One. It is 20 years old.
I dont know… it depends what kind of noise its making. Maybe it require just a simple cleaning or wash pump motor bearing worn out
Lights are flashing on front turned off circuit breaker no change
You need to run diagnostic mode to see what kind of errors stored in the memory
I have 2 lights blinking in the control panel. I did the diagnoses pressing the normal light then high heat light 2 times. But the lights are still blinking and the washer doesn’t start. thanks for ur help
Which lights were blinking?
Lights blinking nothing works
Behind the kickplate at the bottom of your dishwasher, there is a service manual. Pull it out and run diagnostic mode.
I am having a problem getting the rinse aid in. There is tab that goes from left to right but does not seem to open enough for the rinse aid to fill. It just sits in the opening. What am I missing?
Do you have sufficient water pressure providing by the wash pump? If not, then soap will be sitting in the dispenser. It does not always fall down by itself, it needs to be wash out
My new whirlpool Type 583-0 since the day it was installed, has not cleaned properly and the soap pod does not dissolve. It is always laying on the bottom of the dishwasher…Help..
1. There is no water getting in
2. Wash motor failed
Hi there, i have problem, my dishwasher use to leeks. Now it trips the mains
It Depends when it trips the breaker. At the beginning of the wash cycle or when the heater is ON.
My dishwater machine whirlpool stop filling with water when i started give me the faulty F6 wot can be the problem
1. Water tap is OFF
2. Water inlet valve is burnt
We have a fairly hardly used whirlpool dishwasher we used it last fall and it worked good we went away for the winter and forgot to drain the water valve and it got damaged from water freezing inside the valve. I replaced the valve and now it works until the rinse cycle comes on but not enough water comes into dishwasher before the rinse cycle starts we have to add water for it to rinse properly also when it drains after the rinse cycle the pump continues to run these problems started right after we came back for the spring season. When on wash cycle it fills with the needed water. Please help with any suggestions
This is odd. Usually filling time at the beginning is equal to filling time during rinse cycle. Thus, it should fill with the same amount of water every time, unless your dishwasher has a flow meter that measuring amount of water coming in.
My top rack is not cleaning on whirlpool. I have cleaned and checked the spray arms. I have cleaned the filters. I don’t think it has a chopper assembly. Different model. I had a repair man come and he said I have low water pressure but the pressure has not changed that I can tell and has washer has always worked before. I have heard some clunking in the last few months. Could there be any other reason or is my next step to call the plumber? We have hard water but I always use lemon shine with every load.
Does it spray at all? Did you open a door quickly during wash cycle, to see if it sprays water? You dont need to call plumber, he will not fix your problem. Low water pressure where? In the water line connected to the dishwasher or low pressure when its spraying water inside the dishwasher?
A older friend of mine has had some problems with her dishwasher. The water isn’t draining correctly. It going through the overflow spout on the top of her sink insteaqd of through the garbage disposal. Any idea’s?
This video should help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yahN-DvUtRA
My Mother in Michigan just informed me that her 10
year old dishwasher has never worked and has only been used one time. She tried to run a cycle as a trial but found it didn’t reach the bottom or top level even though water filled the bottom. Does this sound like the wash motor to you? Thanks.
Possibly, but seems like dishwasher require some cleaning. If it will not help, then wash motor most likely failed
There is no heat or drying and lots of soapy water just running water cycle (no rinse cycle option)?
My drinking glasses come out of my new Whirlpool dishwasher very cloudy. How do I fix this problem? The cloudy glasses look dirty and unappealing to use, even after a second or third time in the machine. What do I do?
A new dishwasher? Hmmm…Seems like the water entering dishwasher is not hot enough. This is what you can do for the sake of experiment: Dont open hot water faucet before using a dishwasher. let dishwasher start and when it will start washing, open the door and check temperature by hand in the dishwasher. Does it feel hot?
Does not heat or dry the dishes
does not heat or dry, element tested ok.
Q: could it be the thermo fuse?
Possibly it’s a thermal fuse, but also failed relay on the control board
