LG Refrigerator Not Cooling? 6 Easy DIY Fixes & Reset Guide (2026)

Is your LG freezer cold but the fridge is warm? Learn how to fix LG cooling problems, from dirty condenser coils to the dreaded linear compressor failure. Do the quick checks below to determine the cause of the problem first. Below, follow the detailed step-by-step diagnostic guide to save on a service call today.

How to Fix an LG Refrigerator That Won’t Cool (Quick Checklist)

If your LG fridge has stopped cooling, check these 6 things before calling a technician:

  1. Clean the Condenser Coils: Dust buildup on the coils at the bottom-back of the fridge is the #1 cause of cooling failure.
  2. Check the Evaporator Fan: If you can’t hear a fan running in the freezer, cold air isn’t being pushed into the fridge section.
  3. Inspect the Start Relay: A clicking sound from the back of the fridge usually means the compressor’s start relay has failed.
  4. Clear Blocked Vents: Ensure food items aren’t blocking the air vents inside the freezer or fridge.
  5. Test the Door Seals: Use the dollar bill test to ensure your gaskets aren’t letting cold air escape. See below on the drink door air leaks.
  6. Demo Mode/Showroom Mode: If you recently had a power outage or surge, your fridge might have reverted back to Demo Mode, and will not cool. Press and hold the Refrigerator and Ice Plus buttons for 5 seconds to restore normal function. The display will show actual temp instead of “off.”

LG Refrigerator Not Cooling Or Freezing

Fridge and Freezer are both warm, but the lights are on? Your Compressor or Start Relay is likely the culprit. Keep reading for details on each below.

Failed Inverter Linear Compressor

If you have a refrigerator not cooling at all in both the freezer and fridge compartment, then you need to pull out the fridge from its place, remove the back lower panel and listen, to determine whether the compressor is running or not.

If you hear the compressor is running, but not cooling, then you have a failed compressor (90% of the time). In other words, it’s not pumping refrigerant in the sealed system in order to cool down the refrigerator. Compressors cannot be repaired and you’ll need a professional. See warranty details below.

⚠️ Check Your 10-Year Warranty Before You Pay!

If your LG refrigerator is not cooling and you hear a clicking sound or the compressor is hot but not running, you might be facing a Linear Compressor failure. Most LG refrigerators manufactured in the last 10 years come with a 10-year limited warranty specifically on the linear compressor part.

While the part is often free, you may still have to pay for the labor and the sealed system freight. Always ask for a Flat Rate quote for compressor replacement. Due to past class-action settlements, some models even have extended labor coverage.

What to Do: 1. Find your Model Number and Serial Number (usually on a sticker inside the fridge wall). 2. Check your Manufacture Date. 3. Call LG Support at 1-800-243-0000 or check their Warranty Page before hiring a private technician.

Compressor Start relay (10%)

When the thermostat in the fridge senses the temperature is too warm, it sends electrical signal to the compressor to turn on and start cooling. The start relay sits on the side of the compressor unit and sends a burst of start winding to get the compressor up to speed, similar to a starter in the car. It will shut off once the compressor is going.

Signs Your Start Relay is Failing

  • Clicking Sound: You hear a distinct click from the back of the fridge every few minutes, followed by silence. This is the relay trying to start the motor and failing.
  • Shake Test: If you unplug the fridge, pull the relay off the compressor, and shake it, a bad relay will often sound like a box of broken glass.
  • Fridge is Warm, Compressor is Cold: If the relay is dead, the compressor never gets the signal to start, so it stays room temperature.
  • Replacement start relays run around $10 on Amazon, click here. Double check model number before ordering.

Note: we may receive a small commission off your purchase, with no additional cost to you.

LG Refrigerator not cooling or freezing Start Relay

To access the start relay:

  • Pull out the refrigerator so you can unplug it from the outlet and disconnect the water line (if attached).
  • Move the refrigerator to a position that will allow you to open the back access panels.
  • The start relay will be at the bottom of the unit near the compressor. It looks like a black box on most models. See Photo.
  • Using a multimeter, you need to test the relay for continuity between the start and run terminals. See video below.
  • If you don’t have continuity you will need to replace the relay. After installing new relay, return everything to its original position and connect to power.
  • Check to see if the compressor is running normally.

LG Refrigerator Is Not Cold, But Freezer Is fine

How Your Fridge Cools: Fan & Compressor Roles

ComponentLocationPrimary RoleIf it Fails…
CompressorBottom Rear (Exterior)Pumps refrigerant gas through the entire system.Nothing cools. You may hear a clicking sound
Condenser FanBottom Rear (Next to Compressor)Blows air across the hot coils to release heat. The fridge overheats. The compressor may shut off
Evaporator FanInside Freezer (Behind back panel)Distributes sub-zero air into the freezer and fridge.Freezer is cold, but fridge is warm. No air is moving between sections.

Dirty Condenser Coils

The condenser coils are where the refrigerant is circulated to cool the air. The air inside the refrigerator flows across the cold coils and removes the heat. If these coils are coated in dust, pet hair, or lint, your LG refrigerator won’t be able to cool efficiently. If your fridge is struggling to maintain its set temperature or is running constantly, dirty coils are the #1 suspect.

Located at the bottom-back of the refrigerator, you will need to pull the fridge out and remove the rear access panel to see them.

  • How to Clean (Step-by-Step):
    • Always unplug the refrigerator and disconnect the water line before moving the unit.
    • Brush & Vacuum: Use a stiff coil brush or a vacuum attachment to pull away heavy dust. For “caked-on” grease or dirt, use a brush with mild soapy water. Ensure the coils are 100% dry before plugging the unit back in.
    • For hard-to-reach crevices, blowing compressed air can release trapped debris.

Pro-Tip: In a home with shedding pets, these coils should be cleaned every 6 months. It’s the easiest way to extend the life of your expensive compressor! Watch this video on how to clean.

Condenser coils dirty

Condenser Fan Motor Failure

The condenser fan pulls air across the coils to remove heat; if this fan stops, the refrigerator will quickly overheat and stop cooling completely. Your fan motor is faulty if the compressor is running but the fridge is warm. If you hear a buzzing sound from the back of the unit, near the bottom, the fan is usually the problem. How to fix it:

  • Unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear access panel.
  • Hear a humming at the back but no fan spinning? Check the Condenser Fan for a physical blockage (like a stray pet toy or dust bunnies).
  • Spin the fan blades with your hand– they should turn easily. If they are stuck, remove the obstacle and retest. Vacuum the coils while you have the panel open.
  • The Multimeter Test: If the blades spin but the motor won’t run, test the motor windings for continuity. If the multimeter shows an “open” circuit (no continuity), the motor is electrically dead.
  • Replace the faulty motor with an original LG part. Condenser fans run around $25 on Amazon click here. Double check model number before ordering.
  • Make sure all fan pieces and covers are snapped back into place to maintain proper airflow. After plugging the fridge back in, give it 12–24 hours to reach the proper temperature.
  • Watch this video for help with testing the condenser motor. Click here.

Evaporator Fan Motor Failure

The evaporator fan is the blower that circulates cold air across the cooling coils and into both the freezer and refrigerator sections. If this fan stops, your freezer may stay somewhat cold, but your refrigerator will warm up fast. Other symptoms include: 1) you can hear the compressor running in the back, but you don’t hear air moving in the freezer, 2) you hear a squealing sound in the freezer. How to fix it:

  • Unplug the fridge and remove the back panel to access the fan.
  • If you see heavy frost on the back panel before removing it, the fan might just be iced over due to a defrost problem. Defrost the fridge to see if this gets the fan moving again.
  • If you don’t see ice, check for other obstructions and make sure the fan blades spin freely. If they will not turn, the motor bearings may have seized up.
  • The Multimeter Test: Check the motor’s internal windings for continuity. No continuity means the motor is electrically dead and cannot receive power.
  • Replacement evaporator fans and motors are available on Amazon for $20+ click here. Double check model number before ordering.
  • Disconnect the power leads and water supply, remove the mounting bolts, and swap the old motor for a new LG part.

Note: we may receive a small commission off your purchase, with no additional cost to you.

Watch the video below for help with the Evaporator Fan:

If the freezer is still cold but the fridge section is warming up, this problem in 80% of cases is caused by restricted airflow, due to burnt defrost thermal fuse, defrost heating element, or failed evaporator fan.

LG Fridge Temperature Control Failure: Thermostat or Thermistor

The thermostat/thermistor is the sensor that regulates power to the compressor and both fans. If this part fails, the cooling system will not receive the signal to turn on.

Older or more basic model refrigerators use a Mechanical Thermostat—a physical dial you turn that opens/closes an electrical circuit. Modern LG ThinQ and InstaView models use an Electronic Thermistor, which is a small sensor that sends a variable electrical signal to a control board. If your LG fridge has a digital display, you likely have a thermistor (sensor) rather than a mechanical thermostat.

Mechanical Thermostat Failure

  • The Symptom: Your refrigerator is completely silent—the fans aren’t spinning and the compressor isn’t humming—even though the interior lights still work.
  • The “Click” Test: A quick way to check for mechanical life is to rotate the thermostat knob. If you hear a distinct click as you turn it from the “Off” position to a cold setting, the internal switch is likely making contact.
  • How to Troubleshoot:
    • Multimeter Test: To be 100% sure, you must test for continuity. As you turn the dial to a colder setting, the multimeter should show a closed circuit. If it stays “open” regardless of the setting, the thermostat is dead.
    • Location: On most LG units, this is found near the control housing or at the bottom-rear of the unit.
  • The Repair:
    • Safety: Unplug the fridge before handling the wiring.
    • Swap: Disconnect the wire leads and replace the faulty thermostat with a new OEM LG part.
  • The Result: Once replaced, your fans and compressor should kick on immediately. Give the unit 24 hours to reach your desired temperature setting.

Electronic Control Board or Thermistor Failure

The Electronic Thermistor (Modern/Digital Models)

If your fridge has a digital display or touch buttons, it uses a thermistor. This part doesn’t “click”; instead, its electrical resistance changes based on the temperature.

  • The Symptom: Your digital display might show an error code (like Er rH or 15 15), or the fridge may stay at one constant temperature regardless of your settings.
  • How to Test: You must use a multimeter to measure Resistance (Ohms). A good thermistor will show a specific resistance value based on the current room temperature. If it reads “0” or “Infinite,” the sensor has shorted out.
  • The Fix: These sensors are usually small plastic “bullets” clipped to the evaporator coils or the interior wall. Simply unplug the old sensor and snap the new one into place.

LG ThinQ and InstaView models- additional cooling issues

Software Update Fix

LG has recently started software updates to improve refrigeration “performance.” If your fridge is only slightly too warm, or has condensation, try updating the software. Connect the fridge to the LG ThinQ app. If an update is available, it will prompt you.

  • In some areas, LG is even sending technicians out specifically to perform free “cooling optimization” software updates. If you get a text from LG about a “free update,” it’s likely legitimate and worth doing.

Door-in-Door Cooling Gap (Drink Door)

  • The Problem: The gasket between the inner door and the outer door can fail, or the outer door may not latch perfectly. This allows cold air to leak out constantly, causing the main compartment to stay at 45°F instead of 37°F.
  • The Fix: Clean the inner gaskets with warm, soapy water. If you can see light through the seal when the door is closed, the gasket needs to be replaced.

Smart Diagnosis™

Newer units have a speaker/mic system built into the top hinge.

1. Open the LG ThinQ app and select Smart Diagnosis. 2. Hold your phone’s microphone near the Smart Diagnosis logo on the fridge. 3. Follow the app’s prompt to press a button (usually the “Freezer” button) for 3 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

LG Refrigerator Not Cooling And No Error Code

If your refrigerator has no error codes but at the same time is not cooling, that means the main control board can not detect problems using internal sensors. This is one of the common problems with LG Linear Compressors. It seems like its running but not producing any cold.

How Do I Know If LG Refrigerator Compressor Is Bad?

If you have your compressor running (you can tell by listening to the compressor), but not cooling at all, this is the first symptom that the compressor is failed.

Why LG Refrigerator Is Not Cooling After Power Outage?

One of the reasons why the refrigerator stopped cooling after power outage is the main control board failure caused by voltage spikes. You can try to reset power by flipping breaker, but if it will not solve the cooling problem, than the control board is malfunction and you need to call for repair.

Is There A RESET Button On A LG Refrigerator?

In order to reset LG refrigerator, you need to turn power OFF for 2 minutes. This procedure will reset the main control board/motherboard.

If the first recommendation above will not help, likely LG refrigerator control board comes with a TEST button on the back of the fridge. Please refer service manual above to perform this procedure or watch the video below.

If you have LG Instaview Refrigerator, you can perform Smart Diagnosis Test as well.

Is There A Recall On LG Refrigerators or Lawsuit Against LG ?

There is a recall on LG refrigerators with linear compressor failure that started on September 23, 2020 for refrigerators purchased between 2014 and 2017. If you have a No-Cooling event on your fridge, you can find information about LG Fridge Settlement at https://www.classaction.org/blog/lg-fridge-settlement-heres-how-to-file-a-claim-for-some-cash

  1. Have a 12yr double door LG,GR-456ZMQ,freezer @16°C, fridge@1°C,no frost in rear of freezer, so defrost is ok, evaporator fins clear, condenser cleaned, and fan ok, evaporator fan running, just feel air flow to fridge is less, has icebeam door cooling, no visible moisture seen in fridge compt..when u open fridge, even kept freezer flap at position 1..still feel flow is less..any suggestions welcome..otherwise entire refrigerator is ok…

  2. I have an LG linear. It has stopped cooling and freezing. Compressor is running, Fan is working, coils were dusty but not terrible. The water over flow was full. Any idea where to start.

  3. I have an LG and the fridge is working fine but the freezer is thawed out.but oddly their is still ice in door? Any idea????

  4. Hi Eugene, my LG LFXC24726S/02 is not cooling in the fridge. But the freezer is working. Please advise. Thanks so much.

    • Remove back panel in the freezer to see if any frost build up on the evaporator coils. If yes, then you need to check defrost fuse and thermostat along with the heater for continuity. That frost or ice, blocking airflow into the fridge compartment

  5. I have an LG 3 door refrigerator that stopped working completely. Lights and front panel work. Can change temperature on panel but neither compressor or fans are working. Unplugged and let sit a few hours plugged back in and still nothing.

  6. Hello Eugene,
All of the sudden my 4 years old refrigerator model LG LFCS31626S/01 stopped cooling (both freezer and fridge compartments. The compressor seems to run (makes very soft sound), fan is working, coils were somewhat dirty (I cleaned them but it did not help). Nothing is hot, not frost accumulation. Tried to reset by unplugging for 1 min. Nothing worked. Is it compressor issue?
    Thanks a lot!

  7. Hi. LG LTC20380 (top freezer). Intermittent condenser fan issues, especially when the ambient temperature is above 75 F or if items were not carefully placed in freezer so as to avoid contact with fan wall. Replaced condenser fan about 3 days ago and put additional clamp on fan/motor shaft to prevent slippage but still have intermittent problem which I can only solve by a combination of flipping the circuit breaker off for 5-10 minutes and then pressing the temperature control switch until it cycles through the lights on/off sequence (this unit has the-I think utterly insane-demo sequence control). I should add that at times the new fan is slow to start when I open the freezer door. Unit otherwise provides stable cooling when fan works correctly, though it can take a while for the compressor to kick in after the initial “clicks”. Is this a faulty connection, a bad switch, or something else (I am assuming it isn’t two bad fans)? Thanks.

  8. I have an LG Refrigerator LFXS29636B model and it has stopped cooling. Compressor and fan are running. In my community of 100,000+ population there is no one who will do warranty work for LG products. Any suggestions as to what is wrong with this fridge?

  9. Hi Eugene. Before I forget, tks for this super video. I have a LG Model LXFS 30766D/01–3 yrs old. This is the fourth time I had experienced major problems with this frig. The last time was about 3 weeks ago, where nothing was working. On the control panel, there was a couple of letters next to freezer and the frig. Not sure but frig had a large F(?) and the freezer large Df(?).Have a little faint noise coming from rear. Tech at LG said to unplug the unit and do not open door for 4 hours–plug back in. This worked for 3 weeks. Same problem now but no large letters on control panel like before. Shut down again for 4 hours–did not work. Temp in frig is 51F now. Have to make room in garbage can for spoiled food in the frig. Tks again.

    • Do lights come ON in the fridge compartment? Pull the fridge out and listen to compressor. Does it make any sound? If compressor is not working, it can be the main control board malfunctioned

  10. Yes my GE stainless steel refrigerator that I just bought you you’re doing nothing but the light is coming on

  11. Hi Eugene, I habe a LG lfxs32766s refrigerator, that is not cooling either the fridge or freezer, the compressor seems o be running, when I opened up the back panel of the freezer it started frosting the coils. However I cannot test the evaporator fans since my fridge has electronic door switches and will not allow fans to run while doors are open. Both fridge and freezer are not cooling properly. Any thoughts?

    • Thermal fuse blown or defrost thermostat failed, as long as you have frost build up on the evaporator coils, so check that

  12. Hi,

I have LG LMXS30776S fridge which is just a little two years old. My fridge completely stopped working out of nowhere.. my husband and i pulled it out and tried the reset button on the back.. nothing was blinking.. compressor seems to be running and freezer seems to get air every now and then… the fans in the fridge and freezer are both running… that doesnt seem to be the issue..it isnt making ice either.. just concerned since food is going bad. I’ve removed the model/serial number sticker that was inside the fridge.. so apparently i dont have the serial number anymore (dnt ask me why i removed it.. i really dont even know) i have unplugged the fridge too.. nothing is working

  13. I have a New LG fridge model LRFXS2503S that is less than a year (a few months) Ice maker no longer making ice. Freezer no longer freezing. Fridge not as cold as temperature selected. Freezer 0 degrees F. Fridge 38 degrees F.

The Compressor is warm and you can hear it running. The fan next to it is running also. Hit the fridge test button and all the fans inside the fridge is running and feels cold but not cold enough to freeze foods in the freezer or make ice. What should I do at this point?

    • First, buy 2 fridge thermometer from Homedepot to know what is the actual temp is, in both compartments. Don’t rely only, on display temp. After that, come back again to this website and give us update, whats the actual temp

  14. I’m confused by my 2 year old LG LSXS26366D side by side refrigerator. It is not cooling at all, but it has power, the light work, both the condenser and evaporator fans are running, the linear compressor is “running” with soft sound, and there are no error codes on the front. The condenser coils are clean, and the freezer has completely defrosted. There never was an ice build up. I unplugged it last night for several minutes, then plugged it in again, but still no cooling. I’m not having much luck on finding troubleshooting tips.

    • Hi Thomas, unfortunately your fridge has a major problem with compressor. It is running but not pumping freon in the system. Contact LG , they should have 10 years warranty for the compressor

  15. Can the compressor be hot and still not function? My LG is not getting cold, is around 40 degree fridge and 39 freezer, all fans are working, The compressor is warm, but doesnt seem to be turning on. would this be a relay?

    • Its a compressor or restricted sealed system issue. Check warranty and call LG, LG providing 10 years warranty for the compressor

  16. LG Linear Compressor Fridge (3 Yr old). Compressor & Cooling Fan both running. Ice maker not making ice, per above suggestions, I reset it and it filled with water. Will see if it dumps & refills in next couple of hours.
Fridge is cool but not COLD.
Freezer seems to be working fine.
I have cleaned the coils and unplugged/plugged back in after 1 min so system can reset.
Please advise what temperature the Freezer & Refrigerator should be set on (F & C) and what other trouble shooting can I do before calling a repair man to see if Control panel needs replaced (part cost?) Thanks in advance for your professional advice.

    • -18C freezer, +3C fridge. But from my experience these Linear Compressors failing quite often and as i know LG provides 10years warranty no them. Check with LG first and then call technician

      • Hi,

My LG inverter linear fridge regularly has condensation and freezing in the freezer section. The fridge is just over a year old, LG-GT-B4387PZ, and the LG mechanic has come once and cleaned the ice out – which had also formed on the cooling coils of the freezer. I cannot seem to find out why there is repeated condensation and freezing of that water with icles forming in the freezer. It has just been 3 months since the mechanic cleaned all that ice out – which was weird there was so much to begin with. The mechanic simply said oh this is normal, which we all know is not.

Will be grateful to be guided in the right direction on what is the likely issue – should we be asking LG to replace the fridge?

      • Hello, for me it sounds like the problem with defrost cycle (if frost build up on the evaporator coils): 1. Defrost thermostat malfunction 2. Defrost heater burnt or 3. Control board not initiating defrost cycle.
And i agree with you its not normal..

  17. Hi Eugene

    I have a LG GR-B712YLP model fridge.
My fridge doesnt cool but the freezer functions fine.
Can it be a relay problem or tempreture control thermostat.
All the other components are working.
    Please advise.

    • Hi Ricco, take a look at the freezer back panel. Can you see any frost build ups? If yes, you have defrost issue. You need to check Defrost Control Assembly for continuity. here is how it look like. Unfortunately i can’t find exact part for your model. is this model number you provided is correct? Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

      • Hi Eugene,

I have the same issue. I opened the back and no frosting issue. compressor seems to be working (it is making that buzzing sound), and fan is working. I cleaned the coils and dust around the fan as it was fairly dusty. Anything else I can do?

      • Hi Eugene,

I have an LG Refrigerator/Freezer and the freezer is building up a lot of frost. When I tried to increase temp neither the fridge nor freezer gage would let me increase temp. Every time I touched them on UP SIDE of gage it reduced temp. Any idea what might be wrong?

      • So, you have two issues? Exessive frost in the freezer and touchpad button not properly responsive? Not sure about button, but if you have excessive frost in the freezer, it can be an issue with defrost cycle or parts (defrost thermostat, defrost fuse, defrost heater)

  18. Hello Eugene,
Thanks for this website and providing quick and timely responses. I have a LG LFXC24726S refrigerator I purchased that’s just over two years old. In the span of 24 hours, the ice cube maker wasn’t making ice, the refrigerator wasn’t cooling and the freezer was no longer freezing food. I called a repairman familiar with this product and he said 99% of the time it’s a failed compressor. Could it be something more/less than this?

    • Can you confirm that compressor is running? Just pull the fridge out, remove back cover and listen for sounds coming from compressor? if compressor is running but not cooling, it can be 1. Failed Compressor or 2. Restriction in the sealed system (drier filter location)

      • SO my LG is not yet 3 yrs old and quit cooling 10 days ago. LG dispatched a technician who promptly replace compressor, and recharged system. Still no cooling! Technician returned to vacuum system a second time and recharge again. Still no cooling. LG won’t do anything more till technician makes a 3rd attempt to repair, but technician won’t return because he say that he has done ‘everything possible’ and LG will not pay him to return a 3rd time (can’t say I blame ’em). LG is just screwing us both around & I strongly recommend DON”T BUY LG !!!
Warranty is useless -10 days with no refridge and LG don’t care

    • I have the same refrigerator. I ran the error code and it came up 22 which meant a faulty compressor start relay. I am trying to find that part but no one seems to have it. Was it your compressor, or this part? Very frustrating

  19. LG modelFXS24623S Open left door and it trips the circuit breaker. Any idea as to cause. Open right door, all is fine.

    • Wow, never even heard about this issue, that when open left door it trips the breaker. No clue what may cause this issue
