Kenmore washers are reliable, but common problems can still happen. If your washer won’t spin, drain, agitate, or starts making loud noises, shaking, or leaking, this guide breaks down the 7 most common Kenmore washer issues and what usually causes them. A Kenmore washer error code guide at the end helps you quickly diagnose electronic problems.
Kenmore Washer Won’t Spin
Lid Switch (Top-Load Models)
- Prevents spinning when the lid is open (safety feature)
- Test for continuity with a
multimeter - Replace the switch if there is no continuity
Drive Belt
- Connects the motor to the transmission
- Inspect for looseness, wear, or breakage- it should be tight
- If it is loose on the pulley or broken, tighten or replace
Replacement Belts are available on Amazon for around $8, Click here.
Note: we may receive a small commission from your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Motor Coupling (Top-Load Models)
- Links the washer’s motor to the transmission
- Designed to fail if the washer is overloaded
- Also will fail over time with use
- Replace if cracked or broken
Motor Control Board (some newer models)
- Control Board supplies power to the motor
- If faulty, the washer will not work properly, if it works at all
- Check for burned components and verify power output
- Replace if not sending power to the motor
transmission Clutch (top load models)
- Clutch makes connection between tub and transmission
- Helps the tub gradually reach spin speed
- Worn clutches prevent spinning
- Not repairable — must be replaced
A clutch kit is available on Amazon for around $15-30, depending upon your model number. Double check before ordering.
Note: we may receive a small commission from your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Rotor And Stator Assembly
- Rotor and Stator work together to create an electromagnetic force strong enough to spin the tub in both directions
- Inspect rotor magnets (inside) for damage
- Check the stator windings for defect
- Replace defective components as needed
Amazon carries a Kenmore Washer Rotor Stator sensor for around $35. Double check parts and model number before ordering.
Note: we may receive a small commission from your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Kenmore Washer Making Loud Noises
Drum Bearing
- Bearing mounted in the center of the outer tub; allows the inner tub to spin smoothly
- Worn seals let water in, causing rusted bearings
- Produces a loud roaring or “airplane taking off” noise
- Complex repair; bearing and outer tub are often replaced together
Replacing this part is one of the more complicated fixes. I suggest you replace the bearing and outer tub at the same time. $25-35 on Amazon
Drive Pulley
- Can become cracked, bent, loose, or worn
- Causes banging or squealing noises
- Inspect and replace if damaged– $20 on Amazon
Drive Belt
- Worn or damaged belts can snap or slip
- Creates loud squealing or slapping sounds
- Replace if visibly worn or broken
Clutch
- Failing clutch can cause grinding noises during or after spin
- Sounds like metal-to-metal contact
- Faulty clutch may also keep the washer from spinning at all
- Not repairable — must be replaced
Clutch Assembly Kits begin around $18 on Amazon. Double Check model number and click here. Drive Belts are around $8 on Amazon. Click Here.
Note: we may receive a small commission from your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Drain Pump
- Noisy during draining indicates drain pump failure
- Drain pumps can become faulty when filled with debris, or due to damage
- Access the drain pump to clear it of any clogs
- Replace pump if noise continues after cleaning
Drain Pump Replacements begins around $20 on Amazon. Double Check model number and click here.

Kenmore Washer Won’t Agitate
Many agitation problems are caused by the same drive components responsible for spin issues, since both functions rely on the motor and transmission.
Drive Block or Bell (top load models)
- Connects the agitator to the transmission
- A worn out block causes transmission shaft to turn while the agitator stays still
- Inspect for stripped or worn splines
- Replace if damaged or worn
Drive Belt
- Transfers power from the motor to the transmission
- Loose (from pulley) or broken belts prevent agitation
- Inspect and replace if worn or damaged
Motor Coupling
- Links the motor to the transmission
- Designed to fail if the washer is overloaded
- Inspect for cracks or breakage and replace if faulty
Kenmore Washer Won’t Drain
Drain Pump Or Drain Hose
- Debris can block the pump or hose and stop draining
- Remove and inspect for clogs
- Clean thoroughly if blocked
- Check the hose for cracks or damage and replace if needed
Drain Pumps are available on Amazon for $20 click here. Drain hoses run around $20 for the assembly. Click here.
Coin Trap or Filter (select models)
- Catches small objects before they reach the drain pump
- A clogged trap will prevent proper draining
- Remove and clean to restore normal operation
Washer Shakes or Vibrates excessively
Shock Absorbers
- Worn shocks can no longer absorb tub movement
- Inspect for leaks, cracks, or damage
- Replace damaged shocks; replacing all at once helps ensure even wear
Suspension Rods
- Support and stabilize the tub during wash cycles
- Broken or worn rods cause excessive shaking
- Inspect for visible damage and replace as needed
A suspension rod replacement kit is less than $30 on Amazon.
Counter Balance Springs
- Help keep the tub balanced during operation
- Broken springs cause strong vibration and shaking
- Inspect springs and mounting points for rust or damage
- Replace any faulty springs and rusted frame connections
Remember to check the frame where the spring attaches. If there is rust on the frame, replace that as well. $7 and up on Amazon.
Note: we may receive a small commission from your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Leveling Leg
- Keep the washer stable on the floor
- Loose or uneven legs cause vibration
- Adjust and lock legs securely to level the washer
Kenmore Washer Filling Slowly
Water Inlet Valve
- Controls water flow into the washer during fill cycles
- Faulty valves can cause slow filling or no fill
- Clean inlet screens at the hose connections
- Replace the valve if cleaning doesn’t fix the issue
Also keep in mind that this valve requires good water pressure to work right. So, first check that your water pressure is adequate.
Low Water Pressure
- Inlet valves require at least 20 PSI to operate properly
- Check household water pressure at the supply valves
- Fully open hot and cold water supply valves
Washer fill problems can trigger error codes like LF or F20, indicating a slow fill or water supply issue that may require checking the inlet valve or water pressure.
Kenmore Washer Leaking water
Drain Pump
- Can leak if damaged, cracked, or hoses become loose.
- Cannot be repaired; must be replaced.
- See above for additional details.
Replacement parts Start around $25 on Amazon.
Tub bearings Seal
- Torn tub seal can cause water leaks from around the seal.
- Leaking seal can risk damage to tub bearings, also.
- Replace both tub seal and bearings if leak is found.
- Replacements on Amazon $25 for tub seal and bearing kit. click here
Note: we may receive a small commission from your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Drain Hose
- Check for leaks, especially between pump and back of machine.
- Replace if damaged; hoses available on Amazon (see link above)
Water inlet valves
- Most common cause of water leaks.
- Inspect valves at the back of the washer under the top cover.
- Replace if leaking. $15-22 on Amazon click here.

✅ Important Notes
- Kenmore appliances are built by multiple manufacturers (Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, etc.), so exact meanings can vary slightly by model.
- Many drain-related codes (F02, F21, Ld) typically point to clogged filters, blocked hoses, or a failing drain pump.
- Door lock, motor control, and control board errors often require electrical testing or part replacement.
Hi Eugene! First of all, thank you ahead of time for any advice. 🙂 My name is Erin and I have a Kenmore Elite HE washer, model 796.2927 (if that helps). I have looked through my manual and didn’t see this problem listed anywhere. Long story short… in the morning when I went to throw a small load in the dryer, I went to open the lid only to notice the lid was locked. (Still is). Evidently, when I closed the lid, a small amount of a sock that was sitting on top got caught under the rim of the lid. I pulled that corner of the sock out, thinking that the lid would open now, but the washer will not turn on. I unplugged the machine, even checked my breaker thinking that somehow it may have tripped it…. but nothing. Sigh. I have tried pressing the power button and start button at the same time, tried pressing the power and turning the dial…. Sigh. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Check this video, how to enter diagnostic mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z1JdsJYa14
If you are not able to run diagnostic, then something happened with the control board and needs replacement
My kenmore 700 series washer will not display or turn on at all. Any ideas?
Did you try to run diagnostic mode? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z1JdsJYa14
I have a Kenmore Elite washer that works great, however the fabric softener dispenser is always full of water when cycle is done. (I rarely use fabric softener) I empty it each load, but fills each time.
I have a Kenmore Series 700 top load washer that will not let water in the tub unless it’s set to “clean”. We checked the intake hoses and they are fine.
Kenmore washer 26002010 Have hot and cold water. Not getting any warm water. When set to warm. All I get is cold water.
Your machine has 4 water inlet valves (valve assembly). Check continuity on all of them
I have a 110 model Kenmore and changed the shock absorb springs to stop the shaking in spin mode and still shakes at spin cycle !!!!!!! What do I check next ??????????thank you Dave !
I have a Kenmore H E 2010 top-loading washer. I am not getting any warm water. When set to hot. I get hot water. When set to cold. I get cold water. ( When set to warm water all I get is cold water. I shut the supply off to the cold water and no hot water is flowing when set to the warm cyc. Mod. # 110. 26002010. Ser# C11730344.
I found a magnet attached to my washer door when I opened it. Did it break off from my machine? If so can I still use my washer.
Have no idea… I have never seen any magnets coming off from the machine
I have a Kenmore Elite front load that fills up with water after I have finished my wash! How do I fix this please?
Do you mean the washer is filling up by itself? Without running wash cycle? If yes, then you have faulty water inlet valve
I have a kenmore elite series 91 and it fills and agitates but will not switch on it own to drain, spin , rinse. I can manually make it go through the cycles. What might this be?
Does your machine has a display? Any error codes were showing up?
I have a Kenmore Elite Oasis. It gives me error code oL, but not overloaded at all and then when it cuts off, clothes are still pretty wet. I ran diagnosis, and it fills with water during C01, then cuts off. The machine has recently been moved. Any ideas if I can fix myself?
Top Load Model 110-28081700
Look underneath machine, maybe something preventing motor from spinning properly. Because OL error code related not only to unbalancing, but also when the motor is drawing more current than it needs to.
we have a top load kenmore model 592-29222 that leaves thin brown residue/debris on clothes and in bottom of drum. Each running of the cleaning cycle leaves the drum with more debris which smears when wiping it out and if left to dry becomes brittle like tree leaf particles that can be vaccumed out. Is this too, calcium mixed with rust as in your earlier exchange with Brenda and Lee?
Hello, I have a Kenmore front loading washer model #970L48422E0. It’s not working on the normal cycle. All other cycles seem to be working fine. I ran it through a couple of cycles and disconnected the power in hopes to reset but nothing works. Just wondering if you might be able to assist.
Can you elaborate, what exactly not working? Lets say, its not filling up, its not draining or its not spinning. I need more details about it
I have a Kenmore elite front loading washer, when it starts the spin cycle it drains sometimes but I also noticed that when the timer hits 10minutes it jumps back up to 12minutes and it keeps repeating like this and won’t finish the wash cycle because of this.
Model# 592-495070
Any thoughts?
Seems like an unbalanced load. Washer will try to distribute load inside by adding time and try again and again.. Did you try with a small load?
I have Kenmore front load washer. I started load with comforter then after about 5 minutes of cycle hit pause button to add something . I hit start button but nothing will happen. Also the door did not lock.
If the door unable to unlock, means there is water in the drum. You need to drain water and then start a new cycle
I have a model HE3t. It won’t start. All the interface lights work. Except when you hit start nothing happense. It also won’t go into diagnostic mode. Typing in the sequence the lights and beeps are all right, but at the end the LED panel flashes briefly, but it doesn’t go into the diagnostic mode (looks like it checking for something and can’t complete the command). What I don’t hear is the distinctive click of the door lock either when you hit start on a normal cycle or that you normally hear when entering diagnostic mode. Is there a way to test a door lock? Or does anybody have other suggestions as to the possible problem?
Depends on the type of your door lock, some of them repairable, some not. What is the model number of your washer? Just want to see what kind of lock on your machine
I have a kenmore 600 series HE top loading washing machine. It has always worked great, but this morning, it would not power on. I pushed the power button and nothing, completely dead. It’s definitely not the outlet. Any ideas?
If its not a power issue, then it might control board failure
Hi I have a Kenmore front load machine, wash, and works great, but on the spin cycle it pounds hard. Took the rear cover off. drum appears to be tilted back.I see the 2 springs on plastic brackets [2 adustments] and the back shocks. should I try and move the springs to the last positions?
I am not sure what kind of last position you are talking. Usually, front-loading machines have 2 big springs on each side on the top and 2 or 4 shock absorbers that supporting drum
I choose Hot water Wash but the water comes out cold .
Try another cycles with hot water only. Do you have a sink close to the washer? Water coming out hot?
Top Load Kenmore 600s Washer It powers on but won’t allow me to change cycle or start. The control board was replaced little over a year ago.
