Frustrated With Your Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Problems? Whirlpool is a big name in appliances. One of the most popular models of their washing machines is the Cabrio.
While this model has fewer problems than most, there are still some common fixes they require sometimes.
Today we’ll take a look at all the common problems with Cabrio washers and the related fixes.
If Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Spin
The spin cycle is arguably one of the most important cycles in a wash. Is your Cabrio not spinning? Check these common issues:
Drive Pulley Nut
The nut that holds the drive pulley in place can become loose over time.
When this occurs it can cause your Whirlpool Cabrio washer to stop spinning.
You’ll have to locate the drive pulley and tighten the nut.
Shift Actuator Malfunction
Washers have many moving parts and endure a great deal of weight.
This means that the parts which handle motion are susceptible to cracks and malfunctions.
If your Cabrio won’t spin and is displaying error codes such as F7 or E1 you may have a shift actuator malfunction.
When this occurs, you’ll need to replace the part by following these steps:

No in-home service calls. No appointments.
- Unplug the machine and turn off all water lines.
- Disconnect the water hoses on the rear of the machine. Be sure to mark the hot and cold, so you don’t get them confused during reconnection.
- Remove the drain line from the wall to prevent it from pulling tight.
- Lay the washer down on its front. Be sure to rest it on a thick towel for cushioning.
- The part you need to access is located under the machine.
- Remove the shield by unscrewing the top and bottom screws. Set the shield aside.
- The shift actuator can be found on the left, slightly below the shield.
- Remove the broken part. There are two screws that hold the actuator in place. Unclip the wire harness and set the old part to the side.
- Install the new part. Reconnect the wire harness, and begin following the steps backward to reassemble the machine.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Problems? Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Not Filling
It can be extremely frustrating when your washer will not fill with water.
If you are dealing with this issue, check the following two items:
Clogged Inlet Valve
You should begin by checking the water inlet hoses and screens to see if they are clogged.
The inlet hoses connect your machine to the main water supply.
There are metal screens attached in both ends of the hoses to protect your inlet valve from debris and sediment.
To check this issue, turn off the water supply to your washer.
Next, detach the hoses from the faucet and the washer.
Clear the screens of any debris that’s present. If you find they’re damaged, replace them.
Also, check the inlet valve itself to see if any debris has bypassed the screens and is present inside the valve.
If so, clean out the two ports on the valve.
Burnt Water Inlet Valve Coils
The water inlet valve can sometimes malfunction due to burnt coils.
If you’ve previously checked your home’s water pressure and the inlet hoses, the water inlet valve is most likely faulty.
Just like most electrical components, the coils in the valve have a limited lifespan.
Over time, they can become overworked and burn out.
When this occurs, the electrical signals being sent to your washer are unable to trigger the gates of the valve to open.
To test if this is the issue you should use a multimeter to test for continuity.
If there is none, replace the part, as water inlet valves are not made to be repaired.

Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Bearing Problems
If your Whirlpool Cabrio washer is loud during the spin cycle and leaking water from the bottom, you’ve most likely got a bearing problem.
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Leaking Bearing Seal
The most general cause for this is a torn tub seal.
This will cause water to leak from the seal and work its way into the tub bearings.
You’ll want to fix this as soon as possible, as it will cause your bearings to fail.
It’s a good idea to replace both the tub seal and tub bearings when this occurs.
Just keep in mind this repair is not for the faint at heart, it requires you to disassemble most of the machine.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer OL Error Code
One of the most common codes that appears on a Whirlpool Cabrio washer is the OL error code.
The code is basically an overload error. So, sometimes it will be as simple as an overloaded machine.
If this code is present on your machine and you can’t clear it, you’ll need to check these two parts:
Bad Bearing
If the bearing goes bad it will not allow your tub to spin freely. You will generally know this is the issue if your machine roars loudly during the spin cycle.
To fix this, you will have to replace the bearing. During the repair you’ll need the tub seal bearing kit and the bearing driver tool.
Direct Drive Motor Nut Loose
If the nut on the direct drive motor becomes loose the OL error code can appear. To check this part, follow these steps:
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall.
- Turn off the water supply and disconnect water inlet hoses from the rear of the machine.
- Pull the washer away from the wall to allow you room to work.
- Loosen the screws on the access panel so you can remove it.
- Locate the drive motor and belt.
- Use an adjustable wrench to secure the motor’s mounting nut. Begin by turning it counterclockwise to loosen the nut.
- Hold the motor in place firmly and tighten the motor nut by turning your wrench clockwise.
- Keep one finger on the belt, when the belt can only be depressed about a half inch you have the right amount of tension. This may require 2 people.
- Reassemble the machine, restore the power, and reconnect hoses.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Lock
If your Cabrio washer won’t lock, it’s generally the lid lock. Here’s how to troubleshoot this part:
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Lid Lock
This is one of the most common problems with direct drive washing machines.
If your Whirlpool Cabrio washer will fill with water but won’t spin, the lid lock switch is probably bad.
To diagnose this problem you’ll want to put the washer in a spin mode. Next, open the lid and insert a screwdriver into the lid switch actuator hole.
If the washer runs while you do this, but won’t run with the lid closed – the switch is bad. When you do this test and don’t get a result it may be necessary to check for continuity using a multimeter.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Drain
The drain pump is the most common problem when a Whirlpool Cabrio washer won’t drain.
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Drain Pump Stuck or Faulty
Here are the steps on how to troubleshoot this problem:
- To begin, check if the drain pump is getting voltage from the main board. You can do so by listening to see if the pump motor runs.
- If it doesn’t run, check the plug and wiring connections at the pump. Be sure the connections are good and the wiring harness has no damage.
- If there is voltage going to the pump and you can hear it the pump is probably clogged.
- Remove the hose that runs from the tub to the pump. Check it for blockages.
- Remove the pump motor and check it for debris. If it is stopped up, the machine will not drain.
- Check the impeller inside the pump to make sure it doesn’t wobble.
- If your washer still doesn’t drain, remove the hose that runs from the pump to the drain.
- Make sure this hose is free from debris and blockages.
- If your pump is getting power, and no clogs are found it’s best to replace the drain pump motor.
- You can also use a multimeter to check for continuity inside the drain pump. If you find none, then the drain pump is faulty.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Stops Mid Cycle
Does your washer stop mid cycle? Is it displaying error codes such as F1 or E2? If so, look at these items:
Error Code F1 or E2
These error codes indicates a failure in the main control of the motor control circuit. Here’s what you should do:
The first step you should take is unplug the washing machine for at least 5 minutes. Plug it back in and see if the board was reset.
If the error code is still present you’ll need to unplug the machine again and remove the back panel.
Check all wiring to ensure connections are tight and there are no damaged wires.
Also check the wiring harness on the stator to make sure it’s connected properly with no damages to wires.
If all the wiring is fine, then your motor control circuit board will need to be replaced.
To be sure this is the problem there are some diagnostic steps that will help verify the board is faulty.
This is done using a multimeter and your washer’s wiring diagram.
In conclusion, those are the most common issues with Whirlpool Cabrio washers.
Have you dealt with other issues? What were they and what did you have to do to fix it?

My lady has a Cabrio washing machine it will lock but won’t spin and leaves my clothes soaked and unwashed
My washer is giving a SD error code
my carbio washer always gives an ol code when finished washing, but the clothes are no spun dry. I can put over to rinse and spine and it will put water in and spin it out. what is the problem. also neither the Clorox or fabric dispenser works
Please check article above, i described possible issues
Hi,
My Cabrio HE washer occasionally doesn’t drain properly. I’ll go downstairs to unload, and find standing water. Usually if I set it to drain and spin, the job will get completed. Last night I found no water, but sopping wet clothes and this time the drain & spin option didn’t work. Sounded like it was running, but I think it was just the drain cycle because the clothes didn’t seem to shift. The machine is probably 15 years old.
Whats the model number of your washer? It could be motor coupling or transmission clutch
Hi Eugene,
Model# is WTW5640XW0
I noticed the lid lock is flashing, too.
Thanks!
Please check the inner left side of your washer, you will see a service manual there. Just follow procedures on how to check washer for error codes
My washer starts to sense mode but then the lid lock disengaged. If I tip the washer I hear a click and the lid lock turns back on. It begins to sense but sounds like it starts to spin and a kncokinh noise starts. It then fills with water and drains some at the same time. Once it starts this cycle it acts like it is done. Does not slin or anything g else after.
Does any error code show up? Did you run diagnostic mode? Did you test shifter? Check service manual on the inner side of the washer
Hi my cabrio washer will not clean my clothes all the way what causes this
I need more information about your particular situation. Lets say, its not washing and leaving brown marks on the clothes, then maybe it’s not agitating and thus not washing properly your clothes.
Our Cabrio washer model# wtw7000dwo will not clean our clothes. I ran a load of whites, used a little clorox and my clothes looked like they had just went in. My makeup stain still there. I ran it a second time and still same problem
I had one time last week two errors where the manual states to unplug machine. It worked but not sure if that is part of the problem. It makes a clunking sound now too when it’s washing
My cabrio whirlpool washer squeaks when agitating and or sounds like a loose fan belt on a car. Thoughts?
Take a look underneath the washer? Motor belt is loose?
I just bought a Cabrio 6600 (I think) it appears to be a real quirky machine. I’m used to 30 year old mechanical washers.
Do these machines agitate by oscillating? Because I don’t think I have seen it do anything but spin. Without oscillation I don’t see how it can clean clothes. I get the OL error sometimes even if I literally have a towel and a few pairs of sweat pants in there. And I have to go back after every load and drain/spin the sopping wet clothes
Run diagnostic mode to see what caused the problem. Here is video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoCTzbl4FPs
My washer starts up and after a couple of minutes it shuts off and shows no error codes. What could it be?
Control board issue
I love the Cabrio models. However, i just pjrchased a new set but the washer wont fill. I can hear it trying but i get nothing. What cpuld be the problem?
Water tap is on?
Hi, my Cabrio will not turn on or power up in anyway. I check the unit is getting power. Try and decide if it’s worth trying to get fixed or replacing for a new unit it’s probably about 5 to 7 years old.
Seems like a problem with a control board… Call local appliance parts store and ask them, how much control board cost.
Mine is doing the same thing. Did you figure it out?
Push the same 3 buttons over 3 times in sequence and power to board should come back on it’s a reset for the board
What 3 buttons do you push to reset?
My Cabro will stop working when there is 14 minutes left and beep. Always and only at 14 minutes remaining.
You need to run diagnostic mode to see what kind of error or issue, stopped the washing cycle.
My washer beeps during the wash cycle and sometimes just stops running. Doesn’t show a code but it is louder now. Also hits the walls now when it spins
its not clear what may cause all these issues
I have a whirlpool washer capri at six years old, the appliance when spinning goes in the high speed and stays there sounds like a jet engine taken off. It’s never done that before. The control knob for the spin cycle does not adjust the spin cycle speed . What do you think the problem could be.I’m about ready to buy a new one. not whirlpool.Parts that have been replaced the water pump the washer tub seals the shaft springs that hold the tub.
For me it sounds like drum bearings lack of grease and thus worn out. its a major repair, better to get a new machine, let’s say Frigidaire, GE or even LG
Washer is leaking… I changed the center seal but it still leaks. Is there another seal I missed?
Well, when you disassembled your washer how many seals did you find on the shaft? You were needed to replace all of them
I have a Cabrio washer that will not let me use cold water except
in the delicate cycle. I just had a new program board put on,
hoping that would help. Well, it did help because before only
one cycle worked. Now the cycles work, but only with warm
or hot water. The delicate cycle did use cold water, so I know that
cold water can come through. I got the machine used, so I
don’t have a manual that would give any information.
My washer just gets stuck in the middle of the load. It sits there making the normal churning noise, but never changes, the clock remains on the same time for minutes on end. Have to turn it off and let it drain, then run a rinse and spin. What to do?
My Cabrio washer sounds like there is water outside the drum. The water completely is gone but the clothes are still soaked. I tried to run it on a drain and spin cycle and it sounds like a freight train. Any solution for this?
if clothes are still wet, thats mean there was no spin. Something wrong with transmission or clutch. You need to call a technician to look at
My model W10607424B had e2 and f2 error code it keeps filling with water the time might be on 1:05 then it goes up I don’t think the cycles are running right
My Cabrio washer (top loader) stopped working on hot water, just buzzes.. not water. It works fine in bold cycles. Help!
Water tap is turned OFF or water inlet valve is clogged by calcium deposits.
I have a Whirlpool Cabrio washer that started flashing error codes F6 & E3 alternately about 5 to 10 minutes into the cycle. After consulting this website, I followed the recommendation to pull the plug for 5-minutes. After a 5-minute wait, I inserted the washer power cord into the same outlet, then pressed POWER button on the far left side of LCD panel. No response at all! No lights, no sounds, nothing. Next I visited the electrical panel. “Washer” circuit breaker had not tripped, but I reset anyway to be sure. Back at the washer, still no washer response. Any ideas?
Control board failure, i guess
After my Whirlpool Cabrio washer sat overnight, I pressed the power button this morning and the washer LCD panel turned on while continuing to flash F6 & E3 error codes. Maybe not as severe as a control board failure? Where can I find out more about the F6 & E3 error codes? Thanks.
Sorry Edward, i dont have any troubleshooting guide about this error code. F6E3 communication error between user interface and control board. . Remove ribbon cable from the user interface and control board, and clean connectors with alcohol. I’ve seen them sometimes oxidized
