Frustrated With Your Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Problems? Whirlpool is a big name in appliances. One of the most popular models of their washing machines is the Cabrio.
While this model has fewer problems than most, there are still some common fixes they require sometimes.
Today we’ll take a look at all the common problems with Cabrio washers and the related fixes.
If Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Spin
The spin cycle is arguably one of the most important cycles in a wash. Is your Cabrio not spinning? Check these common issues:
Drive Pulley Nut
The nut that holds the drive pulley in place can become loose over time.
When this occurs it can cause your Whirlpool Cabrio washer to stop spinning.
You’ll have to locate the drive pulley and tighten the nut.
Shift Actuator Malfunction
Washers have many moving parts and endure a great deal of weight.
This means that the parts which handle motion are susceptible to cracks and malfunctions.
If your Cabrio won’t spin and is displaying error codes such as F7 or E1 you may have a shift actuator malfunction.
When this occurs, you’ll need to replace the part by following these steps:

- Unplug the machine and turn off all water lines.
- Disconnect the water hoses on the rear of the machine. Be sure to mark the hot and cold, so you don’t get them confused during reconnection.
- Remove the drain line from the wall to prevent it from pulling tight.
- Lay the washer down on its front. Be sure to rest it on a thick towel for cushioning.
- The part you need to access is located under the machine.
- Remove the shield by unscrewing the top and bottom screws. Set the shield aside.
- The shift actuator can be found on the left, slightly below the shield.
- Remove the broken part. There are two screws that hold the actuator in place. Unclip the wire harness and set the old part to the side.
- Install the new part. Reconnect the wire harness, and begin following the steps backward to reassemble the machine.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Problems? Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Not Filling
It can be extremely frustrating when your washer will not fill with water.
If you are dealing with this issue, check the following two items:
Clogged Inlet Valve
You should begin by checking the water inlet hoses and screens to see if they are clogged.
The inlet hoses connect your machine to the main water supply.
There are metal screens attached in both ends of the hoses to protect your inlet valve from debris and sediment.
To check this issue, turn off the water supply to your washer.
Next, detach the hoses from the faucet and the washer.
Clear the screens of any debris that’s present. If you find they’re damaged, replace them.
Also, check the inlet valve itself to see if any debris has bypassed the screens and is present inside the valve.
If so, clean out the two ports on the valve.
Burnt Water Inlet Valve Coils
The water inlet valve can sometimes malfunction due to burnt coils.
If you’ve previously checked your home’s water pressure and the inlet hoses, the water inlet valve is most likely faulty.
Just like most electrical components, the coils in the valve have a limited lifespan.
Over time, they can become overworked and burn out.
When this occurs, the electrical signals being sent to your washer are unable to trigger the gates of the valve to open.
To test if this is the issue you should use a multimeter to test for continuity.
If there is none, replace the part, as water inlet valves are not made to be repaired.

Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Bearing Problems
If your Whirlpool Cabrio washer is loud during the spin cycle and leaking water from the bottom, you’ve most likely got a bearing problem.
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Leaking Bearing Seal
The most general cause for this is a torn tub seal.
This will cause water to leak from the seal and work its way into the tub bearings.
You’ll want to fix this as soon as possible, as it will cause your bearings to fail.
It’s a good idea to replace both the tub seal and tub bearings when this occurs.
Just keep in mind this repair is not for the faint at heart, it requires you to disassemble most of the machine.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer OL Error Code
One of the most common codes that appears on a Whirlpool Cabrio washer is the OL error code.
The code is basically an overload error. So, sometimes it will be as simple as an overloaded machine.
If this code is present on your machine and you can’t clear it, you’ll need to check these two parts:
Bad Bearing
If the bearing goes bad it will not allow your tub to spin freely. You will generally know this is the issue if your machine roars loudly during the spin cycle.
To fix this, you will have to replace the bearing. During the repair you’ll need the tub seal bearing kit and the bearing driver tool.
Direct Drive Motor Nut Loose
If the nut on the direct drive motor becomes loose the OL error code can appear. To check this part, follow these steps:
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall.
- Turn off the water supply and disconnect water inlet hoses from the rear of the machine.
- Pull the washer away from the wall to allow you room to work.
- Loosen the screws on the access panel so you can remove it.
- Locate the drive motor and belt.
- Use an adjustable wrench to secure the motor’s mounting nut. Begin by turning it counterclockwise to loosen the nut.
- Hold the motor in place firmly and tighten the motor nut by turning your wrench clockwise.
- Keep one finger on the belt, when the belt can only be depressed about a half inch you have the right amount of tension. This may require 2 people.
- Reassemble the machine, restore the power, and reconnect hoses.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Lock
If your Cabrio washer won’t lock, it’s generally the lid lock. Here’s how to troubleshoot this part:
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Lid Lock
This is one of the most common problems with direct drive washing machines.
If your Whirlpool Cabrio washer will fill with water but won’t spin, the lid lock switch is probably bad.
To diagnose this problem you’ll want to put the washer in a spin mode. Next, open the lid and insert a screwdriver into the lid switch actuator hole.
If the washer runs while you do this, but won’t run with the lid closed – the switch is bad. When you do this test and don’t get a result it may be necessary to check for continuity using a multimeter.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Drain
The drain pump is the most common problem when a Whirlpool Cabrio washer won’t drain.
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Drain Pump Stuck or Faulty
Here are the steps on how to troubleshoot this problem:
- To begin, check if the drain pump is getting voltage from the main board. You can do so by listening to see if the pump motor runs.
- If it doesn’t run, check the plug and wiring connections at the pump. Be sure the connections are good and the wiring harness has no damage.
- If there is voltage going to the pump and you can hear it the pump is probably clogged.
- Remove the hose that runs from the tub to the pump. Check it for blockages.
- Remove the pump motor and check it for debris. If it is stopped up, the machine will not drain.
- Check the impeller inside the pump to make sure it doesn’t wobble.
- If your washer still doesn’t drain, remove the hose that runs from the pump to the drain.
- Make sure this hose is free from debris and blockages.
- If your pump is getting power, and no clogs are found it’s best to replace the drain pump motor.
- You can also use a multimeter to check for continuity inside the drain pump. If you find none, then the drain pump is faulty.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Stops Mid Cycle
Does your washer stop mid cycle? Is it displaying error codes such as F1 or E2? If so, look at these items:
Error Code F1 or E2
These error codes indicates a failure in the main control of the motor control circuit. Here’s what you should do:
The first step you should take is unplug the washing machine for at least 5 minutes. Plug it back in and see if the board was reset.
If the error code is still present you’ll need to unplug the machine again and remove the back panel.
Check all wiring to ensure connections are tight and there are no damaged wires.
Also check the wiring harness on the stator to make sure it’s connected properly with no damages to wires.
If all the wiring is fine, then your motor control circuit board will need to be replaced.
To be sure this is the problem there are some diagnostic steps that will help verify the board is faulty.
This is done using a multimeter and your washer’s wiring diagram.
In conclusion, those are the most common issues with Whirlpool Cabrio washers.
Have you dealt with other issues? What were they and what did you have to do to fix it?

My white laundry comes out with brown streaks on it. I have used Alfresh tablets but it still happening. Coming from around outer edge of the agitator.
Nothing you can do. Those brown flakes are stick to the outer side of the tub.
We’ve had the same problem for the past couple of years. Dark clothes also come out with brown/grey streaks. I’ve used Affresh, run it with no clothes many times(hot water), tried vinegar etc, all to no avail.
Motor shuts down immediately. WTW5800BWO
Motor jammed?
Washer will not dry clothes enough at the end of the cycle. It showed dr code. I did change the drain pump already and checked all the pipes connecting and they are all clear. My washer is 4.8 cu. ft. Cabrio® High-Efficiency Top Load Washer with Clean Boost Option Model No. # WTW7040DW.
I can not find where the filter is. Can you tell me how to find it. I can not find how to locate it even in the manual.
I can hear the drain pump is working. I think even the older drain pump was working too, but I just changed it thinking it may be running slow. There may be a problem with the washer drum speed, as it may not be spinning at a very high speed at the end. Please help me to diagnose it.
This model doesn’t have a drain pump filter. Did you check the drain hose between the drain pump and tub, especially check on the tub side. Remove the hose and check that opening.
When I was installing the new drain pump I did check all the pipes including the one from the tub to the filter pump and even put them under water tap and water was flowing without obstruction. I did put vacuum hose to the tub opening where the drain filter pump is attached and turn it on and nothing came out. Yesterday I did trying washing again in n a different cycle and now even more water standing in the washer than before and it said the same code DR. I tried just spin cycle after that and cycle again said DR code. When I turned the machine off the power button again was blinking very rapidly and after that I can not turn the machine on. If I take the wire out of the electric outlet for about 30 seconds and put it back in again then power button and other buttons so work again. This happens every time when I am trying to wash or spin.
Well, not too many things left to check, but did you try to drain water into the bucket instead of standing pipe? Same thing?
You mean take the pipe out from the drain in the wall and put that pipe into the drain on the floor or in bucket while the machine is running?
Yes, but you don’t need to wait until machine will finish a cycle. You just need to turn dedicated Drain/SPin cycle ON and see how machine is draining
This is just weird. I did all of that and sometimes the machine is draining but mostly it is not. I even pull the drain pipe out from the wall drainage and then I put it in the drain on the floor. I tried running different cycles and including spin and rinse cycle. There is no drain and spin cycle on this machine. You think there may be something wrong with the computer system on this machine? It is still saying DR code but it did say LF code 2 times as the water did not drain and I tried to run heavy garment cycle.
Check water pressure switch and hose connected to, make sure it’s not plugged with gunk on the tub side
Had lid lock replaced on my cabrio top load washer last year and now I get a light that simply says lid and won’t start
Run diagnostic mode to see whats the problem. Service manual for your machine located on the inner left side between drum and panel
My whirlpool cabrio just stopped working 2days ago and it wont drain the water out. And it wont wash the clothes. I turned it off and put it on rinse and spin it wont do it. I can here a faint clicking power noise. It wont drain or doin. I had to remove the clothes and they was on the 2nd rinse and it stopped right there. It wasn’t unbalanced. I unplugged it again and still not working. It has been doing it over 6 months months. I think it is blocked as the lid works fine.
If its not draining, then yes, drain pump or filter is clogged
Hi my top load washer same whirlpool is leaking from top left side when draining in wash cycle I can send a video. Thanks
My Cabrio Washer 6 years old works fine, but after completing wash we turn off hot & cold water valves to stop a minor drip into the tank from the upper left water valve.
well, replace the valve then
My Cabrio platinum WTW8500BRO only fills ¼ of the way, wash or rinse on the highest soil level setting. Been stumping me for awhile now.
Our Cabrio washer model# wtw7000dwo will not clean our clothes. I ran a load of whites, used a little Clorox and my clothes looked like they had just went in. My makeup stain still there. I ran it a second time and still same problem
I had one time last week two errors where the manual states to unplug machine. It worked but not sure if that is part of the problem. It makes a clunking sound now too when it’s washing
I would call a technician to take a look at it. It requires some skills to properly troubleshoot an issue
Mine sounds the same. Help roars in final spin
My washer whirlpool cabrio platinum washer 580-04 spins but when it dose sounds like it is off or a spring is broken. Spins but sound loud and off
My Whirpool Cabrio Platinum keeps stopping with a LF error, keeps stopping at 19 minutes on a Normal load. Tried unplugging it for a while but the LF keeps stopping the machine at 19 minutes.
I have a 2 year old cabrio model WTW8000DW5 and it just started shutting off completely mid use. No code, no anything just off. It is in my garage so I’m trying to run a load right now and it’s been at 55 mins since starting it, for 10 mins now and is trickling in water very slowly.
Sounds like a problem with the control board
Hello my cabrio is giving a dr code
dr error code – long drain…
1. Drain filter partially clogged
2. Drain pump or hose clogged
My Cabrio Platinum “shuts off” when its done washing the clothing like it should, but something keeps running even with it shut off? maybe drain pump? It would last a few minutes but now its been over an hour and unplugging and replugging the outlet wont reset either, it just starts running again.
What is the model number of your washer?
Hey Eugene. We have the same problem w/ our Cabrio mod wtw6600sw2. Any suggestions? I just ordered a reman control panel p/n w10189966
Well, without installing a new control board you will not know if it will fix the problem or not. PS. this is correct board and should fit your model
My Cabrio HE washer is leaving large amounts of lint all over my dark clothes. I have tried different temperatures, cycle settings, extra rinse, liquid soaps, and clean it monthly with Affresh. What else can I do to make it stop?
it is calcium deposits mixed with some dirt. Nothing you can do, unless taking the drum apart and clean it inside.
Hi I have a whirlpool cabrio wtw5500bw0 and when I turn it on it has a loud high pitch screech so I instantly turn it back off can you give me any suggestions as to what part I may need to buy because I’m honestly thinking about just replacing the entire transmission…I did just buy a new splotch drive kit but my problem remains please any help you could offer would be appreciated thank you
1. Motor belt is loose
2. Water inlet valve partially clogged (try to turn water off and restart washer, if noise will not show up, then it is problem with the valve)
2. Transmission failed (less likely)
Hi, my Cabrio washer has sitting water in the softener fill dispenser, any recommendation. Thanks
A hose from the dispenser to the drum is clogged

You need to run diagnostic mode to see whats happened. Service manual located on the inner left side of the washer.
Water leaking under the left front corner of Cabrio. I checked the soap fill dispenser doesn’t seem to be the issue.
