Frustrated With Your Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Problems? Whirlpool is a big name in appliances. One of the most popular models of their washing machines is the Cabrio.
While this model has fewer problems than most, there are still some common fixes they require sometimes.
Today we’ll take a look at all the common problems with Cabrio washers and the related fixes.
If Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Spin
The spin cycle is arguably one of the most important cycles in a wash. Is your Cabrio not spinning? Check these common issues:
Drive Pulley Nut
The nut that holds the drive pulley in place can become loose over time.
When this occurs it can cause your Whirlpool Cabrio washer to stop spinning.
You’ll have to locate the drive pulley and tighten the nut.
Shift Actuator Malfunction
Washers have many moving parts and endure a great deal of weight.
This means that the parts which handle motion are susceptible to cracks and malfunctions.
If your Cabrio won’t spin and is displaying error codes such as F7 or E1 you may have a shift actuator malfunction.
When this occurs, you’ll need to replace the part by following these steps:

- Unplug the machine and turn off all water lines.
- Disconnect the water hoses on the rear of the machine. Be sure to mark the hot and cold, so you don’t get them confused during reconnection.
- Remove the drain line from the wall to prevent it from pulling tight.
- Lay the washer down on its front. Be sure to rest it on a thick towel for cushioning.
- The part you need to access is located under the machine.
- Remove the shield by unscrewing the top and bottom screws. Set the shield aside.
- The shift actuator can be found on the left, slightly below the shield.
- Remove the broken part. There are two screws that hold the actuator in place. Unclip the wire harness and set the old part to the side.
- Install the new part. Reconnect the wire harness, and begin following the steps backward to reassemble the machine.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Problems? Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Not Filling
It can be extremely frustrating when your washer will not fill with water.
If you are dealing with this issue, check the following two items:
Clogged Inlet Valve
You should begin by checking the water inlet hoses and screens to see if they are clogged.
The inlet hoses connect your machine to the main water supply.
There are metal screens attached in both ends of the hoses to protect your inlet valve from debris and sediment.
To check this issue, turn off the water supply to your washer.
Next, detach the hoses from the faucet and the washer.
Clear the screens of any debris that’s present. If you find they’re damaged, replace them.
Also, check the inlet valve itself to see if any debris has bypassed the screens and is present inside the valve.
If so, clean out the two ports on the valve.
Burnt Water Inlet Valve Coils
The water inlet valve can sometimes malfunction due to burnt coils.
If you’ve previously checked your home’s water pressure and the inlet hoses, the water inlet valve is most likely faulty.
Just like most electrical components, the coils in the valve have a limited lifespan.
Over time, they can become overworked and burn out.
When this occurs, the electrical signals being sent to your washer are unable to trigger the gates of the valve to open.
To test if this is the issue you should use a multimeter to test for continuity.
If there is none, replace the part, as water inlet valves are not made to be repaired.

Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Bearing Problems
If your Whirlpool Cabrio washer is loud during the spin cycle and leaking water from the bottom, you’ve most likely got a bearing problem.
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Leaking Bearing Seal
The most general cause for this is a torn tub seal.
This will cause water to leak from the seal and work its way into the tub bearings.
You’ll want to fix this as soon as possible, as it will cause your bearings to fail.
It’s a good idea to replace both the tub seal and tub bearings when this occurs.
Just keep in mind this repair is not for the faint at heart, it requires you to disassemble most of the machine.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer OL Error Code
One of the most common codes that appears on a Whirlpool Cabrio washer is the OL error code.
The code is basically an overload error. So, sometimes it will be as simple as an overloaded machine.
If this code is present on your machine and you can’t clear it, you’ll need to check these two parts:
Bad Bearing
If the bearing goes bad it will not allow your tub to spin freely. You will generally know this is the issue if your machine roars loudly during the spin cycle.
To fix this, you will have to replace the bearing. During the repair you’ll need the tub seal bearing kit and the bearing driver tool.
Direct Drive Motor Nut Loose
If the nut on the direct drive motor becomes loose the OL error code can appear. To check this part, follow these steps:
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall.
- Turn off the water supply and disconnect water inlet hoses from the rear of the machine.
- Pull the washer away from the wall to allow you room to work.
- Loosen the screws on the access panel so you can remove it.
- Locate the drive motor and belt.
- Use an adjustable wrench to secure the motor’s mounting nut. Begin by turning it counterclockwise to loosen the nut.
- Hold the motor in place firmly and tighten the motor nut by turning your wrench clockwise.
- Keep one finger on the belt, when the belt can only be depressed about a half inch you have the right amount of tension. This may require 2 people.
- Reassemble the machine, restore the power, and reconnect hoses.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Lock
If your Cabrio washer won’t lock, it’s generally the lid lock. Here’s how to troubleshoot this part:
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Lid Lock
This is one of the most common problems with direct drive washing machines.
If your Whirlpool Cabrio washer will fill with water but won’t spin, the lid lock switch is probably bad.
To diagnose this problem you’ll want to put the washer in a spin mode. Next, open the lid and insert a screwdriver into the lid switch actuator hole.
If the washer runs while you do this, but won’t run with the lid closed – the switch is bad. When you do this test and don’t get a result it may be necessary to check for continuity using a multimeter.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Won’t Drain
The drain pump is the most common problem when a Whirlpool Cabrio washer won’t drain.
Note: We earn a small commission on purchases, at no additional cost to you.
Drain Pump Stuck or Faulty
Here are the steps on how to troubleshoot this problem:
- To begin, check if the drain pump is getting voltage from the main board. You can do so by listening to see if the pump motor runs.
- If it doesn’t run, check the plug and wiring connections at the pump. Be sure the connections are good and the wiring harness has no damage.
- If there is voltage going to the pump and you can hear it the pump is probably clogged.
- Remove the hose that runs from the tub to the pump. Check it for blockages.
- Remove the pump motor and check it for debris. If it is stopped up, the machine will not drain.
- Check the impeller inside the pump to make sure it doesn’t wobble.
- If your washer still doesn’t drain, remove the hose that runs from the pump to the drain.
- Make sure this hose is free from debris and blockages.
- If your pump is getting power, and no clogs are found it’s best to replace the drain pump motor.
- You can also use a multimeter to check for continuity inside the drain pump. If you find none, then the drain pump is faulty.
Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Stops Mid Cycle
Does your washer stop mid cycle? Is it displaying error codes such as F1 or E2? If so, look at these items:
Error Code F1 or E2
These error codes indicates a failure in the main control of the motor control circuit. Here’s what you should do:
The first step you should take is unplug the washing machine for at least 5 minutes. Plug it back in and see if the board was reset.
If the error code is still present you’ll need to unplug the machine again and remove the back panel.
Check all wiring to ensure connections are tight and there are no damaged wires.
Also check the wiring harness on the stator to make sure it’s connected properly with no damages to wires.
If all the wiring is fine, then your motor control circuit board will need to be replaced.
To be sure this is the problem there are some diagnostic steps that will help verify the board is faulty.
This is done using a multimeter and your washer’s wiring diagram.
In conclusion, those are the most common issues with Whirlpool Cabrio washers.
Have you dealt with other issues? What were they and what did you have to do to fix it?
Comment below and let us know. We’d love to hear from you!
I have whirlpool cabrio model wtw5500xw0 I replaced water inlet valve, drain pump and shift actuator yesterday ran through manual cycles via tech book inside washer and still no agitate or spin I’m lost can you help me out. Otherwise washer runs all other cycles
Why did you replace all these parts? Did you run diagnostic mode to see what’s the possible problem? Did you get any error codes?
I didn’t run diag i will try this and follow up
So I ran the diagnostic an error code. F7E1 if I’m reading correctly
For F7E1 error This should help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsHsdhZhv8Q
When a wash load is done, the done light comes on, the cycle is complete, but the washer still sounds like it is running. No error code appears. I can open the lid and nothing is happening inside because the cycle has completed. I turned the power button off then on, and it affects nothing. Something is still running, loudly. What’s going on ?
Have no idea… Are you sure it is a washing machine?
Why does the Whirlpool Cabrio top load washer not fill enough to cover the load within? I watch the cycle and all the time there is clothes/sheets that do not get agitated.
I have over sized hose and enough water pressure, I even check the inlet sceen but still do not have enough water in the tub when washing
What water level do you use? Low, Medium, High, or Automatic? Water level controlled by water pressure switch
How fast is it filling? If you see a weak water flow, then it might be the problem with the water inlet vavle.
I use an automatic setting. I’m fortunate to have very good water pressure. The drum doesn’t fill at all it just runs and runs only wetting the inside of the drum until I get a LF error code.
How high the drain hose is sitting in the standpipe? Does Washing Machine Drain Hose Need to Be Elevated?
Drain pipe is nearly vertical. It’s stretched as high up as the house will allow. It is only about 3 inches down into the drain pipe. It’s was about 4 but brought it up another inch.
Well, i would take the machine apart and see why water is draining while filling.
My washer allows water to enter the tub but won’t fill up. The water just runs and runs without ever filling until I get a LF (long fill) code.
So, water filling up and at the same time draining out?
Hi, my Cabrio washer is making a loud clicking noise. It reminds me of a Wheel of Fortune flapper sound but a little more harsh. We can usually hear it about three or more times while washing. It does it a little at the beginning, it does it for a couple minutes in the middle and (I hope this helps with diagnosing it) it winds down just like the Wheel of Fortune from fast down to nothing and the clicking stops right before the machine beeps to signal the wash is done. What is it???? I thought if it was the bearing it may be more of a banging or grinding. Any help is appreciated.
My Cabrio topload washer will only work properly on the “Mixed- Normal” cycle. Any ideas on how to resolve this?
My washer will stop mid cycle and the lid unlocks. No codes showing
run a diagnostic mode to see whats the problem is. Service manual located on the inner left side of the washer
Having trouble getting the Diagnostic code to show up. I have already replaced the lid lock switch.
Service manual for your washer is located on the inner left side (between drum and front panel). There are clear instructions on how to enter diagnostic mode
My Cabrio washer will power on but when you press the start/pause button, it double beeps and does nothing. Sometimes, it will straighten itself out after being unplugged for a short amount of time. How do I fix this issue?
Run diagnostic mode and check what could be the problem. But usually, washer beeps twice when you didn’t close the lid. If you closed the lid, then it can be an issue with the lid lock
Ours just died mid cycle.. can’t find anything that works above.. but yet. uneven load previously led to having to stand over washer and re-start multiple times while filling water until “balanced” then would finish spin and drain… right now clothes are locked in.. no error code no nada.. I think it had a heart attack.. how to unlock door to remove clothes so they don’t mold.. HELP
Turn power OFF and plug it in after 5 minutes. Lid lock should unlock
What does code F2 mean?
Something loose, eery load some like it’s off balance how can I fix this
My whirlpool cabrio washer will not come on at all. At first I thought it was a tripped breaker, but the plug is hot, 120v+. Would a bad lid switch keep it from turning on when pressing the power button?
My Whirlpool Cabrio washer takes an enormous time (sometimes, not always) to complete a wash cycle. I have the deep water setting engaged and soil level set to high. Is this why it takes so long?
Every load large or small, normal or hand wash gets stopped in the spin cycle with 9 minutes left because of “uneven load”…
I have the same issue. Mine shows UL which we take to be Uneven Load. its been doing this for a long time now, and tonight it decided to do exactly what yours is doing. I hope someone can answer our problem.
The suspension system is worn out. There are 4 cables supporting the drum with plastic knuckles that are worn. Ours did this for months until I replaced the suspension. This is a pretty big job to preform. Must lift the top off and access the bottom also.
My washer drains but not as good as it should is there a part thay collects debris
What does error code LD mean?
“Long Drain”. It occurs at the end of the wash or rinse cycle. If there is water in the tub, either the drain pump is bad or there is something stuck in it. If there is no water in the tub (i.e., it has actually drained despite the error), the sensor is bad.
I get this error for none of the above reasons because after unplugging and replugging the machine, it drains fine. So I think it’s the circuit board – but I already replaced it and it keeps happening. So… good luck.
CABRIOLE TIMER IS WORKING ERRATICALLY ,MAKING LONGER OPERATING TIMES.
Clothes are still dirty especially leaving streak of dirty line on underwear clothes
I have a Whirlpool cabriole When I start any cycle it fills with water but will not engage to the wash cycle I have to reach in the drum manually spin by hand and press start real quick or it do engage the wash cycle? Any tips?
Shifter switch might not be working properly
My bleach receptical/dispenser is always full of water after every load regardless of using on whites setting or not. I have to try and suck the water out if I need to use bleach? How do I resolve this?
I have this same problem…..would someone reply to Leslie please!
i think you need to replace inlet valves, there are several of them and comes as assembly
